When the cv joint goes does it sieze or what happens? We were making a corner with ours and the pto shaft snapped at the tractor. Would it be a seized shaft as the joint looks fine but we also have not ben able to run the machine as the tractor PTO is not functioning know. Anyone else ever have a pto snap due to a bad CV joint and what are the signs of a shot CV joint that you could tell just looking at it without running the machine.

All the components of the CV driveline are available separately. None are cheap; neither are complete halfshafts. Carefully determine which parts need replacing and whether repairing or replacing each half shaft makes more sense. EACH half shaft will spoil $1000 if purchased as a complete assembly.

Most of the time you can grab drive shaft and move back and forth and see play between the cross and the bearing cups.

I worked for a CIH dealer when those mowers were new. Most guys got along with them well, but a couple were good for trashing a CV once a year or so. It is very possible to break one of the balls (attached to the CV yokes) out of the center plate by over-angling the CV joint. Doesn't matter if the PTO is running or not. Driveline manufacturers are REAL particular about warrantying failed CV's; therefore the machine MFG is, too. This is a prime reason builders of shaft-drive center pivot Mo-Co's have gone to a two-point hitch with swiveling gearboxes and conventional shafts. Seems these CV's are rated for 80 degrees. Swinging the mower out fully to one side and turning in that same direction can quickly exceed that angle. If you don't have a broken ball, chances are it was not over-angled. A tractor drawbar extension (8")is required for this machine.
