Swather Canvases

Anyone got any tricks for tensioning the canvases on an old IH pull type swather? Got new canvases, they fit fine, but there is no mechanism on the swather for tensioning other pulling the canvases as tight as possible by hand and it isn't tight enough to drive. Clamp is a metal bar on both sides of the canvas with bolts through it and slits in the free end of the canvas to draw up.
Anybody got a good way?

Some of the old machines used (3?) straps and buckles, more or less like belt buckles to join the canvasses, instead of the modern-style metal splicers like you have.

I remember when I was a kid, every night Dad would unbuckle the canvasses, then tighten them back up before using the swather again. As I recall, you had to pull the straps &*@# TIGHT and buckle them, to get enough tension so the canvasses would operate.

Some drive rollers have a friction band around them to grip the canvas. Maybe yours has those and they"re worn or missing. I"ve never heard of a canvas that won"t pull even when tightened by hand. Seems there is something else wrong like a bushing or shaft binding somewhere. Did the old canvases work OK? How old is the swather?

The swather is probably from the late 50's. Bought it as a wreck, it's straight, but the pitman crank was broken, the reel was kindling and the canvases were gone, like nowhere in sight. Took measurements and had the Old Order folks order a set from A + J in Saskatoon. You're right, we used to use a No. 4 Massey and the canvases were on with belts to tension and they pulled very easily. If this thing is half of what the Massey was, I'll be happy.
