Anyone have a more reasonable source than the JD dealer for the slip clutch plates? I need two of them for a MX-6 brush hog, and the JD dealer wants $23 each.

I don't mind paying a fair price for a product, but those are not expensive parts except from John Deere.

Pilothawk,if you've got all that excess salary from being a pilot then why fret. Airline tickets aren't exactly "CHEAP" Just think the higher the slip clutch plates cost then you have a larger tax write-off!! Tx Jim

Soooo... Rick is right. Driveline parts are made by one or two companies. Weasler is the main junk supplier today when it comes to drivelines, which is most likely what you've got. Deere used them as OEM on some stuff. Determine the shaft series that it's using based on the cross size (cup and distance across), and the corresponding slip clutch size along with the disc diameter and go to a dealer that sells aftermarket shaft parts.
Once you've done all that you may save a few bucks... I'd bet on the discs being 15 bucks each anyway. We're in a world of 2 dollar o-rings today. Slip clutches are just that much more....

Thanks for the help guys. I did the simple thing and paid the $23 each plus tax for the "green" (not really) plates. Fifteen is about what I thought they would be, but my friends at the Deere dealership robbed me yet again.

As for the gentleman that was worried I could not pay for the parts....I am an airline pilot by trade and raise hay to avoid taxes. I can afford to fix the mower and it is now repaired.

Funny though, what money I have is not because I have ever been happy paying someone five dollars for a three dollar part. That is not the way I was raised. Sorry if that upsets you.

John Deere Rotary cutters are made in Quebec. They have the European style PTO shaft. with the non rotating pto shaft guard with grease fitting in the guard and the twist lock pto coupling. Never seen a Bush Hog or King cutter set up that way.

Sounds like the same driveline Landpride uses.

I have an MX-7 cutter I unfortunately have had to deal with what seems like the unreasonable parts price for those machines. I purchased my MX-7 after wearing the deck out on a bush hog that had been cutting on this farm for probably 10 years. The MX-7 just had it's 3rd birthday and probably it's last as it just sheared the vertical shaft in the gear box for the second time($330 a pop). These machines are no better in quality then the cheapies that you can get at the farm and home stores with the JD price tag.

i doubt if any other brand will fit. seems like you"ve been running it to loose or been awful rough on it and causing it to slip a lot. they make chain saws for trees.

So why did you buy a John Deere if the parts are too expensive. If you wanted cheap, why didn"t you buy a cheap cutter? Now you complain because you have a good cutter and now can"t maintain it.

Bottom line is just get them from Deere. Who else would make them?

For all you experts that responded, the chances that Deere actually built the driveline and slipclutch for that cutter are nil. Slipclutch discs off the shelf of a well-stocked Bush Hog, Landpride, or Woods dealer may well match up & work. Whether you save anything remains to be seen. JD parts online tells me that my local dealer wants $19.50 USD for each disc part number W34913 and has 6 in stock. Two are required in the slipclutch assembly.
