What do you think of this grain drill? It has been used for soybeans but supposedly can plant grasses also.

I bought one several years ago, one of the last ones built before the switch to Case/IH. Great drill. Mine is 24 openers with 6" spacing, so it's narrow for beans, but great for small grains. Mine has the low, rear mounted grass seed box; some have high/front mounted. Except for the grass seed tubes, you can see seed falling in most of the seed tubes, right at the top. (Some are blocked from view by frame parts.) If the price is right, I'd say go for it.

Fordfarmer, this 5100 is a Soybean Special, and has neither the front nor the rear grass seed boxes. Supposedly you can plant grass seeds from the main box.

Do you believe that? Would it be possible to retro fit a grass seed box if one could find a box available as parts?

I"m interested in planting bermuda in sandy loam and over-planting oats and clover in improved grass pastures after the first freeze.

Soybean Specials (the ones I've seen anyway) have 7" spacing, but the grass seed boxes were available for them also. Either front or rear mounted can be added without too much trouble, as they are both bolt-on options. I'd guess the rear would be easier to put on. They may even still be available new. You -COULD- put the grass seed on through the main box, but unless it's REAL large/bulky seed, it's going to go on WAY too thick. (I'm not familiar with what bermuda seed.) The openers would put the seed too deep for most grasses too.

The drill has been used to plant Sudan grass without grass seed boxes. I'll have to talk to my seed vendor and get his thoughts.

Apparently the drill has a slow sprocket that you can use for running grass seed through the main box.

It's tempting. A neighbor over-planted clover last winter in his coastal improved grass pastures, using a drill set to drive the disks a minimum depth and had great luck.

I have a IH 510 which is the series older but built the same. I like everything about it except you cannot see the seed falling in tubes so don't know when one is plugged.
