Problem w/ IH 990 Haybine

I have a problem with my 7-foot IH 990 Haybine. Just as the hay comes through the rollers, it wads up between the ends of the rollers and the frame of the haybine - especially at the right end of the rollers. I wired on a piece of stovepipe to "carry" the hay past that point, and it helps a lot, but I still have to stop once in a while to unplug the hay. Has anyone experienced this, or have advice on how to correct it?

Hi , It's the same thing that John described only it goes in front of the rollers and behind the reel to deflect the hay away from the ends of the rollers as the reel feeds them . I don't have a parts book but the IH dealer can find it for you . It's held on with two bolts . You could probably make one out of sheet metal just as easy as buying one . Stove pipe would work for a while but something a bit heavier would be better . It'll take a beating from a heavy crop . I think they are the same profile for both ends , sort of flat with the top and bottom flairs angled towards the center of the machine with a bend at the leading edge to move the hay over about four inches from the sidewall . I'm probably going to have to make some myself because mine have rust holes in them . It's just trial and error making them , cut and fit , cut and fit . That's the way I made the one behind the rolls on the right side that deflected the hay around the tire to the sheet's , it was missing from mine and it makes the machine work great now , no big piles of hay every twenty feet like before . I also made the windrow aerator that was decribed in the owners manual because it was missing too and it takes a day off the drying time . I made it out of compressor tines from a couple of JD 14t balers , some pipe and flat iron . It pushes the hay into the ground and crumples it up making a fluffy windrow . I made it with seven adjustment holes . It works OK on grass but does a real good job on alfalfa . Good luck ! ...Randy

i had two 990's at one time and the shield that goes in front of the rollers was just a flat piece of sheet metal. the cone shaped piece goes behind the rollers to deflect cut hay away from the front of the fins at the back.

there is suppose to be a half cone shaped piece right in behind the rollers to where the cut hay is deflected away fron the end of the rollers and making a place for the tractor tires to run next time if the big adjustable flaps aren't there. so many of them break off and i actually took mine off so the hay wouldn't be bunched up and would dry better. look at a parts book.
