I have a couple of miles of fence lines in my pastures I have to keep mowed. I can only get so close with the brushhog (within about 10 inches or so). I am looking for ideas regarding the best type of mower to get up close to the fence short of walking it with a weed trimmer (which I have done too).

I"ve seen ones that have their own engine (such as the one offered by Northern Tools) and can be dragged in the offset position along the fence. My problem is, my fences are all woven, so I have "stay" wires all the way to the ground. Any trimmer line will simply shred itself on the vertical wires, unlike regular high-tensile fence, where you can just drag it under the bottom horizontal wire.

Any ideas / suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

swisher makes an offset tow behind mower just for trimming around fences and such. its self powered, kind of a big weed eater. the mower end is spring loaded and has a guard that will follow around fence posts and such. i havent used one but the look pretty slick.

Yup, spray. If you clear a wide enough area it also keeps the critters from pushing on the fence trying to get the greener stuff on the other side. 'Course if the other side is a neighbors patch you might want to make sure it's OK with them.

Spray it. We had a guy come in with a boom mower. Big mistake. Since the mower is way out to the side everytime the tractor moves up and down the mower moves much more. He took out the top of several posts, broke the barb wire etc. Mow up close and spray the rest.

I've seen offset rotary mowers. If they stick out beyond your wheels then you can get closer to the fence. I think KingKutter makes one and I believe Worksaver or Land Pride dos also. Search their web pages.

Honestly.... That sounds like a job for a couple quarts of glyphosphate...
Anything short of a string trimmer is going to be hell near a page wire fence, but then pagewire was meant for hell anyway...
