We put down about 2 acres of sweet corn with it this year. It worked pretty good. Bought it from a nice guy in OH. What's the best way to pick the right plates for next year?

Thanks!

My parents used to have a 494 planter. The planter is long gone but the manual and the plates are around some where. If I can find them I will send them to you if you are interested.

Lincoln Ag Products has a web site that lists all the plates they make. They are plastic and we have been using them for years.Plate size all depends on the seed(big or little,Flat or round). Most of the 5 lb.and bigger bags have the plate recomendations on them.I've called the seed companies a couple of times to get them also.Good luck

One seed, one only, should fit into each notch on the plate. Seed needs to fit in totally, but not leave any room for a 2nd to squeeze in.

Usually there should be charts & all to specify which plate to use with each bag of corn, but need to cross them over sometimes, and grading corn size isn't as fussy as it used to be.....

Plate size is printed on the bag. I bought 5 lb bags from Southern States this year with plate size on the tag. Johnny's seed will give you plate size over the phone if not on the bag when ordered from them.

As I recall, there were special sweet corn plates for it.

There's an operator's manual for the JD 494A on Ebay #150152271358 if you need one. Hal
