We have plenty of hay here in east Texas, going to put up probably 1500 square bales of jiggs bermuda grass hay,has some weeds in it not too bad and this cutting was not fertilized and it willl bring $2.00 a bale easy around here come winter, but I was wondering if anybody in the bad drought areas would need it. We have been dry here for at least 3 years and this year has been plenty of rain fall so I know what it is like, let me know if anybody is interested. Thanks

I would say it's good to know I'm not crazy

but that still wouldn't be right.

I'm starting to think the only reason the 5x4 bales

cost more is because they can. Gonna be a tough year for hay.

Pooh Bear most rd baler manufacturers list the width X diameter. After your explaination I agree with your math. Tx Jim

Both bale sizes are 4 feet in diameter.

One bale is 4 feet long, the other is 5 feet long.

Am I using the size notation incorrectly? (4x4, 4x5)?

Should it be 4x4 and 5x4? Is the length listed first?

Sorry if I caused any confusing.

Pooh Bear how can you add a foot in length when both bales you are comparing are 4)FOUR) feet in length? Tx Jim

I'm not adding to the diameter.

I'm adding to the length. 4ft vs 5ft.

If you take the bales and cut them up

into 4ft diameter by 1 foot thick sections

and rearrange the sections then

4 - 4x5 bales become 5 - 4x4 bales.

Wow, must be gourmet hay to be almost double what we pay.

I can't say the hay we get around here is great quality.

Why are the 4x5's so much more than the 4x4's.

We can get 4x4's with tight packed centers for $20.

So I would think the 4x5's with loose centers would go for $25.

But they are being sold for $30. Why the big difference.

4 - 4x5 bales will make 5 - 4x4 bales = $100

4 - 4x5 bales will go for $120. Why the $20 difference.

This is picked up in the field. So no extra labor costs for the seller.

Actually it should save the seller money to be able to bale faster.

Don't think you are doing your math correctly, you need to work pi into your math. Adding a foot around the outside makes for _way_ more volume than you had before.

Forget West Tennessee. Think South East Tennessee.

We are in one of the worst droughts ever.

Picked up 110 round bales today 4x5 @ $30 each.

And this is you pick it up in the field.

The tri state area around Chattanooga is currently

the only area of the USA rated as in an exceptional

drought. That is the worst rating you can get.

And with no relief in site. This may be the worst year ever.

What are 4x4 and 4x5 round bales going for in all y'all's areas.

4x4 rounds at the farm $40, 4x5's $55-$60. Small squares at $5.00 at the farm, $9.50 at the farm stores.

Try getting ahold of someone in western TN. A buddy of mine lives 70 miles east of Memphis says its been super dry there this yr. I would imagen now bales of bermuda grass in his area are in the 6 + a bale now. He is set for himself but others are hurting bad. One farmer there trucked his cattle out of state to a rented farm. It was cheaper to do that then haul the hay back.

Probably Alabama could use it. Heard it was around $9.00 in Fla. The guy I bale for is holding on to his second cutting until Dec. or so because it will likely bring $5-6 a bale. The local classifieds have NO hay for sale but a ton of horses are on the market.

I'm in MD, and never shipped in hay from that far away, but there's a first time for everything. Shoot me an email address and let's see if this'll makes sense.
