rotary cutter deck damage

I see a rotary for sale in my area but the deck is damaged. Semi-circular cut thru the deck.
What causes this? Is the cutter worn out or did it hit an obstruction? Can it still be used as-is or must it be repaired?

If the dealer say"s it"s okay otherwise would you buy and use it as is?

Thanks,
Bill

Plowboy is right, blade flex from mowing over a rock or stump caused this type of damage. The industry folks call this "can-opening" and typically attribute it to operator abuse. You will rarely see on a 5 footer, but the wider widths allow for more blade tip flex and this pushes the tip of the blade up into the deck causing the can opener pattern.

So what should the operator do?
Don't run things over or lift the cutter as fast as possible?

The moral of the story is keep your cutter off things like stumps, boulders and anything else it can't digest and kick out from under it. It would not hurt to have one hand on the lift lever when when working around those type of objects.

I believe someone hit a rock or worse, a stump. This sends the blades a' wobblin- cutting the deck. I've seem a dozen like this. Bought a 6' JD at auction for $125, looked like a wreck. Couple of guys thought it was hilarious that someone would buy it! Well, I am a welder, that was 4 years ago, and the thing works great! In fact, I've "opened" it up again! Like the man said,"weld, weld, weld". The bigger machines (6-7') tend to be more prone to this happening. Good luck!

I think as the blades cut the brush into chunks it drives them up into the top of the brush hog. He had a perfect ring a couple inches wide right where the tips of the blades are. On the front it actually tore the metal away from the edge.

I had the same thing happen to my cutter Except it was already old. I went from a 30hp to a 47hp and then it bulged.

Most likely a rock between the blade tip and the deck. I've got 2 mowers, one Bush Hog 286, other a Woods BB840, with IDENTICAL dents showing from the SAME rock. One was done in 2005, other in 2006. 2007 I moved the rock. Yes, you do get smarter with age.

Bill,

My neighbor "ballooned" his brand new brush hog after taking down 20 acres of brush 1-2".

I think as the blades cut the brush into chunks it drives them up into the top of the brush hog. He had a perfect ring a couple inches wide right where the tips of the blades are. On the front it actually tore the metal away from the edge.

Plus the rocks and everything else he ran over. On his I don't think it was the blades loose since it was new.

If you are a competent welder it could be fixed as long as the gearbox, stump jumper, and blades are ok.

good luck.
Rick

Jammed a hard sharp stone between a blade and the deck.

Check for severe blade damage that could cause an out of balance situation. Buyer beware

Last time I was at this dealer he pointed out rotary cutters in need of a rebuild so I hope he will be honest with this one too.

Bill As long as the gear box is good, weld weld weld, never give up just because of needed metal work.

The bolts that hold the gear box on the deck got loose and allowed it to wobble just ever so much until the blades came in contact with the deck. If its not worn through it should be just fine once you tighten everything back up, if the seller has not already done so.

From the picture on MachineFinder...it looks cut right thru. Sounds weldable. The 6' and 7' rotary's are so expensive I might go for this one.

I'll drive out to the dealer tomorrow.

Thanks,
Bill
