Is there such a thing as a self sharpening sickle bar hay cutter? I have a friend who has a Ford and he describes it as self sharpening.

If so, which models would be self sharpeners?

Also, when it comes to sickle bar cutters, which make and model do you folks like the most?

I think it's top serated sections that tend to stay sharp longer... The serration is scored the length of the bevel on top of the section, and as the section wears, the serration remains. I think the bottom serrated ar eonly marked so far, and once that's gone, there's no more serration...
but, I could be wrong.

I wouldn't call any of them self sharpening. It's just that the top serrated don't go dull as quickly.

I think he may be refering to a bottom serated sickle section. They supposedly don't need to be sharpened. Can't say I've ever sharpened any sections, other than the end one so hay doesn't plug up over the guards from the previously cut windrow. Of course I can only find the end sections in top serated....

I could save a bunch of time and money if I could find something like that. I thought it was great when they came out with bolt on teeth. Larry T
P.S. Maybe I could make a fortune if I could invent such a ting. Hummmmm

I have never heard of a self sharpening sickle mower. I wonder if he is talking about top serrated sections. I have used them in my mower conditioer and like them very well.

I understand about the disc mower. However, I"m only baling round bales on 13 acres 2 or 3 times a year for my cow-calf operation, so it"s hard to justify the expense of the disk mower.

Thats fine sickle mower will do you, they just are by far not plug proof. i do not have any right now on the lot. Do you want 3pt or pull type. I just sold a very nice 3pt unit copuple weeks ago with 7 ft bar. Any Jd units I had good luck with. Let me know what size and style you are wanting and probably will have another unit available in week or so. just make sure if you findunit you are wanting the bar is not sprung or the safety bar latch has not also be sprung.

Rick,
First, thank you from the bottom of my heart for the advice!

Can you send your email address or phone number? My email address is [email protected] and phone number id 512 289 0926. I"m near Austin, TX.

A John Deere sickle mower would be great, either 3 pt or pull type. 7 foot is about the largest, right? Probably a 3 pt would be easier to ship.

I"m looking forward to hearing from you!
