Rotary mower width?

Hi all , In your personal opinions how important is width of mower VS width of tractor tread ? Example ; 6' mower on 8' tractor . I need to get a rotary cutter but it seems that 5-6 foot cat I mowers are much more common than 8-10 foot cat II or pull type mowers . Thanks ! ...Randy

Something that was a concern for me was mowing around posts and other objects. I chose a mower as close to the wheels width, that way it the tractor cleared the object most likely the mower does also. I've hit a few times trying to mow too close to things. I only have two acres to mow, so I got a 5' footer. bjr

in my opinion, i think its best to get the most mower that the tractor can handle. you are correct that 5' mowers are much more common, but with an 8' wide tractor, you probably have enough power to handle a 15' mower. now those can be expensive, but a 10' pull behind can be found for much much less. I use a 10' folding alamo mower that i found on ebay with my 706. be nice to have another 5' wing but the price was right. I have found that using a small mower on a big tractor just EATS fuel up. You have so much engine doing so little work and it takes so much longer to do it. with fuel being what it is the faster i can get done anything the better.

get one that will cut the width of tires if possible, tires can be narrowed on most tractors, I would not have a 5 foot mower on an 8 ft tractor.
