disc plow top link

I just bought a disc plow with an added 3 point hitch. It looks like it may have been used with a piece of chain for the top link. I want to do some new ground plowing and root cutting with it. It has 4 bottoms with a very heavy cast iron wheel in back. Would a piece of chain for the top link be good to let the plow rise over obstructions, or is a solid top link needed to apply down pressure to keep it cutting? Thanks for your advice.

What brand of plow is it?? Taylorway had a disc plow that did not use a top link it worked like a simi mounted bottom plow. Do not use a top link for down pressure on a plow all you will do is bend it. A plow Disc or bottom will take the ground if adjusted properly. If the ground is hard do to dry weather any plow will have trouble taking the ground.

Jimmy, the plow looks like it was made by IH or Farmall. I can't find a nameplate. It has an added on 3 point hitch. The cast iron wheel in back can be set to different angles and heights. Since it's the dry season here, I may need to wait for a long soaking rain to soften things up before I give it a try. Sounds like I would do just as well to use a heavy piece of chain for the top link, no chance of putting the plow in a bind. Thanks for your advice.

You might even consider removing the top link to allow the disc to follow the ground if it is not level. Top link link is used for lifting the equipment.
