I recently bought a 9' NH 489 Haybine from a retired farmer (it had been sitting for 2-3 years). I replaced the cutter bar but am having touble with the pick-up reel slipping. The grass I am trying to mow is not very tall (less than 12") and I have reduced my ground speed WAY down to creeper gear, but the reel invariably slips on the belt and the mower clogs. I have tightened the belt as much as possible with the spring tensioner, but to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Thanks everyone. I adjusted the knives, but don't think they are the problem. They seem to be cutting fine. The reel seems to slip in both tall, dense grass and shorter grass. I will try to play with the ground speed (speed up) and maybe spray some belt dressing on the belt. If that doesn't work, I guess I will try to replace the belt.

It's possible that ther reel is too low and hitting the ground. IT's also possible that the reel is just simply overloaded for it's design. That happens often enough with those old things. Try speeding up some. IF you're traveling about the same speed as the reel is turning I'd be willing to bet that you'll have a lot less problems. Reel's are generally supposed to turn about 25% faster than ground speed, assuming that everything is working right.... but you may have to match the ground speed to the reel speed to get it to work at all. BT/DT. Got the T-Shirt. Bought the discbine.

Have you taken a look a the far end of the reel to make sure grass isn't binding up the works from that end? If you are running the machine without the bar doohickey that goes out in front of the reel, grass will find it's way between the reel and the side of the machine and wad up, causing all sorts of heartache at inopportune moments.

Your reel shouldn't slip unless it's set to low and digging into the ground, or it has bad bearings. Put the machine in operating position and see if you can turn the reel by hand. It should move very easy in one direction and that will tell you a lot. I just sheared the key on the end of my 474's wobble box shaft that drives the reel sprocket. Not a fun project, but that's something else that will cause the reel to slip. As far as plugging, my 474 runs the best and hardly ever clogs at 5mph. If I slow it down it will clog. I've even mowed in damp grass that was 4' tall at 5mph with no problems. The bottom of the knife should rest lightly on the ledger plate of the guard. The guards should also be sharp. If the edges are all round and dull, they need to be changed because they act together with the knife to cut the hay. Get a manual for it from ebay and go to work on it. Have fun.

It may be that the grass is too short and is just piling up in front of the rollers, it does that on my Hesston. The grass won't get pulled into the rollers and then binds up the reel. When you cut taller grass it helps pull the other stuff through too. The top of the guards should have a little clearance above the knives, the bottom of the knives should have even contact across the guard.

When my Heston was plugging it was because a guard wasn't tight against the section and so wasn't cutting its part of the crop and that would plug up. It ought to cut without the reel, I think. Check for bad reel bearings if the belt won't turn it. Or worn pulleys or belt or all of the above.

Are those knife guards supposed to press down on the knives? Or just rid above them?

The sickle cuts like scissors, with the sections being one side and the guard the other. Vintage guards used a ledger plate with a square edge. Like scissors, the sections must rub against the bottom of the slot in the guards. If they don't, they simply don't cut.

Don't really understand the question, but there
are two types of guards, stub with nothing over the
section on the knife bar and the other type which has a thin piece from the point that goes back up over the section. There should be a gap between that and the section. The problem is probrobly the hold down clips which bolt to the back of the guard on top of the sections to hold them down against the
guards. They are supposed to be "SNUG" according
to the manual. which means not so tight that they will cause the cutter bar to bind. The link is to the NH parts book
