How much tractor needed for JD 350 - 9' sickle mower?

I have a Cub Cadet 1999 7360ss, 36 hp diesel, 4x4 weighing probably 4500-5000 lbs with fluid filled tires and FEL installed. Anyone tell me if this will run a 9' John Deere JD350 sickle mower?

Not sure if the hitch fits. The unit is about 3+ hours away. I was hoping someone on the forum here could tell me. I thought I searched and read that someone needed to lengthen their lower 3-point lift arms to make it clear the wheels, or that they had trouble fitting it inside the lift arms? I hate to drive that length without the tractor and get it home to find it does not fit.

Anyone have any insight on if it will fit a CUT?

I can just tell you that a 9 foot mower is in my opinion too much for a Cub Cadet. I have never seen one that weighs 5000 pounds. A Farmall M only weighs 5000.

The Cub Cadet 7360SS 4x4, 36 hp 4 cyl diesel, built by mitsubitshi in 1999 tractor weight 3197 lbs, 830 lbs for Woods 1012 FEL, 600 lbs for Calcium chloride in rear tires (300 lbs each), comes up just short of 4650 lbs. I only add about 200 lbs +- to the equation after that. This is a cast iron machine. The new CUT's are made a little cheaper IMHO.

It's not your typical Cub Cadet. I'm thinking it's made by Mitsubishi. Compact utility, roughly the size of an N Ford, maybe just a tick smaller physical size. It MIGHT weight 5000 with fluid in the tires and a loader. Seems to me the ones I've seen have a CAT 0 or CAT I "limited" 3-point hitch. A picture of the hitch would be extremely helpfull.

It is a little more than your standard lawn mower, and the 350 would have just a Cat 1 hitch, but a 9' bar would put a bit of leaverage on the tractor if you're really mowing something of significance.

A 9 foot mower is too much for a 8N as well.

I know about both tractors in question and I am just saying that I think a 9 foot mowing machine is too much for any tractor of this size whether it be over HP,weight or what have you. I have mowed thousands of acres with cycle mowers and they will torque the small tractors to the right when in hay and mowing. No dought his tractor has enough power, but this is not a farm tractor designed for normal farm implements. I may be completly wrong as I have not tried one of these little fellows. This is only my opinion from lots of mowing experience with small tractors.

Thanks georgeky, that's the insight I'm looking for. The tractor is similar in size/weight/hydraulics to a Kubota 4300 series.

I was worried about torque on the right, but I thought most of the weight would sit on the shoe at the end of the bar when it's in the down/cutting position, or does the 3-point actually hold it off the ground and not actually rest on the ground.

No it's a far cry from a "farm tractor", but it's a pretty rugged little machine. I was also suprised to find out that MTD or Cub made a tractor this size.

If I can get away a year or more cutting about 35 acres of grass hay, then upgrade to a larger tractor, that's what I'm looking for.

Would a 9' "hurt" this tractor for a year or two cutting with a 9' sickle, grass hay, about 35 acres twice a year?

After seeing small tractors like IH cubs and AC-G's with 5' mowers.. it's hard to imagine a mid 30's hp machine having a problem with that sickle bar.. however.. I do not own one like that.. etc..

I don't think it will hurt your tractor. I only think that handling will be the issue. The shoe will support the bar weight while down, but it will be a little heavy when raised for turning. My biggest concern would be the width of your rear wheels. On slopes when the bar is raised it may cause stability issues. Especially since you have the loader on there. I would take it off for mowing and add front weights. Loaders are dangerous in the best of situations and no need in risking death or injury for a little hay.

Thanks George. I will really take a hard look at this 9 footer. Sounds like if I'll be keeping my CUT much longer than a year or 2, I should probably consider the 7' bar, but as long as the 9' fits, does not rub the wheels or the 3-point, and I work real safe on any slopes, that I may be "ok" with the 9' for a year or 2 until I can upgrade the tractor. At that point I would go "much" bigger into the farm tractor that I really want/need to accomplish the tasks I want to do safely and efficiently.

If someone does have a picture of the JD 350 sickle mower on a farm tractor or CUT's 3point, please post them or send them to me. I'd appreciate it.

Now you are having the second thoughts as you should. 7' would be plenty and with your small acreage it would be a shame to get the job done to quickly. Many fine thoughts and dreams are formed while Cutting Hay. Cutting Hay is better than a Shrinks Couch any day in my opinion.

Is that a cat one type hitch or a cat 0 hitch. If its a cat 1 it should work ok if the arms are long enough if not you could put a set on made for the N series fords and they should be long enough

Old, thanks as well. It is a CAT 1 setup. If the arms you mentioned are also CAT 1 and a little longer, then that may do the trick if my OEM lift arms come up a little short.

Now if I can get a clear answer on the torque factor to the right, and the longevity of using this tractor with a 9' mower for a year or 2, that would also help.

Yes they will pull you to the side in some conditions but if you have fluid in the front tires plus the fact it has 4 wheel drive you could probably use it ok. Big thing is how thick the stuff is you will be cutting and if the hyds are strong enough to lift the end up if/when it starts to torque you to the side. Also if you have a loader, don't remember if you said you did or not but that will help keep you going the way you want to go. Now if you could either find a 7 footer or cut that one down to 7 foot you would probably be better off
