I am having trouble getting it to cut the string, the arms are coming all the way forward and the clamps are clamping the string next to the knife and I took the blades off and sharpened them and it still want cut. Any help would be apreciated.

Thanks Allen, I think that might be my problem is that it is not shimmed enough,I will check that in the morning. I hope to have a manual in the mail maybe in a day or so,then maybe I won't have to ask so many questions. Thanks

Hi Ol' Pard,

I had the same trouble with that issue. Took me awhile to figure out just how in the heck that silly hammer assembly works.

The gizmo serves two purposes; it cuts the twine and it also holds the end of the twine stationary to "string it out" when the arms come down so that there is enough length to feed under the bale at the next tie.

It is an "over-center-sprung" arrangement and only works (hammers open or hammers closed) when the heavy spring pressure is overcome by the movement of the slide.

You should hear a loud "clang" when it first moves the arms down to tie (clamps releasing the twine) and it also "clangs" again as it grabs and cuts that twine.

If yours is clamping the twine okay and the knives are sharp, the problem has to be with the springs. Either the two heavy coiled springs are missing/broken OR the two metal formed spring clips are not set tight enough.

Those "sissor clips" should have 0 to 1/64" clearance. Set 'em tight (shim 'em out) so that the clamp will "sissor" against the knife when it hammers home.

Hope this makes sense and hope it helps,

Allan
