We have a 258 rake, but I see a 56 up for auction on the 10th, and I was wondering if parts were compatible. The ad says it has a dual hitch - what does that mean?
thanks

I run both 56 and 256 hay rakes with a Hyd. dual hitch. If it is not hyd, it is a pain in the you know what if you need to travel off your farm. The hydraulic hitch is the best thing since sliced bread with those types of rakes. You can single, or double your windrows with the touch of a lever, plus moving on the roads is a snap since the rakes follow right behind you. I paid $1500 for my hitch and $900 each for my rakes at different auctions. The 258 also being wider also has the option for 3 teeth vs. 2 teeth in the pickup area. 258 is a better rake in my eyes. Hope this helps you...Mike

I also have a 56 and 256 on a twin rake hitch, hydraulic hithc like you are talking about. Differnce is I built my hitch to save some $$$$
Patterned it after New Hollands hitch. Works great. The other hitches would be a pain the rear for sure. I don't have one but I'm getting a 259 and a 260 to rake in a V with a hitch but I will use them on my hyd. hitch as well.

They are a little different. The 258 has an offset rear axle to help prevent tire slippage on sharp turns. The 56 has a straight axle on it as it is quite a bit older than the 256 and 258. The 56/256 has a 8 1/2 foot basket where as the 258 has a 9 1/2 footer on it. Some other parts are the same. I assume the dual hitch is for pulling two rakes at once, but that is just a guess since I haven't seen it.

The 56 rake axle is parallel with the basket, it is not straight across, it is angled. I have had 2 "56" rakes so I do know for sure on that. Now I think a 55 is straight across.

Gary, no problem at all. I do that sometimes myself. That is why the forum is a good thing. If someone is wrong or makes a mistake they should be corrected with no hard feelings at all.

Pulling 2 rakes at once would make sense, as they've also got a 260 right-sweep rake up for auction. Our drive gear is hit and miss, so I was thinking about switching out with the 56, but in the archives I see that parts are still readily available to rebuild these rakes. The 260 looks nice. Search Bill Klassen auctions, Aug. 10.
thanks

Yep. I paid 1250 dollars for a brand new 256 in 1979. Now they are over 4500. I priced a new 258 last fall and they ask me 5300 for it. In 1979 I sold my tobacco for 1.66 per pound. Last year I sold it for 1.56. I don't know how to keep up. I also sold corn in the early 80,s for 16 dollars a barrel and sold it two years ago for 12.(ear corn)didn't have any to sell last year. I have a little this time, but don't have it contracted so it is still up in the air as to what I will get for it.

Model 55's have the straight axle. 56's are angled.

Doug, you are right. For some reason I was thinking my old 55 was a 56. I bought a new 256 in 79 and haven't used the old 55 much since then.
