Woodsplitter Hydraulics

I picked up an American Woodsplitter 3-pt logsplitter for a very good price. I'm in the process of replacing the cracked and split hoses as well as the control valve. I noticed that the entire thing is plumbed with 1/2" hydraulic hoses except the pump suction which is 1". The pump is rated at 22gpm and the valve is rated for 25gpm. It seems to me that I'd get better flow (and faster cycle time) if I replaced the 1/2" hoses with 3/4" hoses. The only restrictions would be the 1/2" ports on the hydraulic cylinder. Any thoughts on this plan??

I would try it the way it is - than decide, it may run to fast with larger hoses on it ??

A 22 GPM pump you say? 1" suction line you say? There's your problem. Get nothing less than a 1.5" suction, and preferably a 2" suction for the few extra bucks it will cost. That'll be the best money you spend on that setup.
After that if you find it slow you can go to 3/4" pressure lines and a larger capacity valve if necessary...
Suction is the present problem though.
There's no such thing as a wood splitter that's too fast. It just can't be made, practically. If by some freak chance that it was too fast it's quite simple to throttle back and move less oil...

I've actually thought of that Jim. Based on how fast it moves now I can't imagine that it would speed it up enough to be(more)dangerous. I think I'm at least at a 20-25 second cycle time now. If I could knock 10 seconds off of that I'd be very happy. It would be fast enough to be productive but not so fast that it would be unsafe.

Where are you in Mass? I'm in Western Mass.

Thanks for the replys, I think both of you have hit on points that I haven't considered.

I probably do have fluid bypassing somewhere in the system as I can stall the splitter VERY easily now. I'm planning on replacing the leaky control valve and the cylinder packing. If that doesn't do it I'll try new seals in the pump. Just addressing these problems my increase my cycle time somewhat. Also I had forgotten that I'm dealing with a positive displacement pump...I was applying my experience with centrifugal pumps.

The only way larger hoses are going to speed it up more than a TINY amount is if the hoses now used are so restrictive that flow is restricted, and the relief or bypass valve is operating, bypassing fluid during the splitting cycle, which I HIGHLY DOUBT is happening.

I would agree with Bob. High pressure hydraulic pumps (gear, piston, vane, etc.) are positive displacement meaning they discharge a given volume per revolution regardless of pressure. There are only two places that this volume can go, either into the work system or past the relief valve. It is not like a centrifugal water pump where the flow rate varies based on the amount of restriction in the system.
