Can anyone tell me what causes hay to wrap around the top crimper roller on my 114 NH haybine, jamming the bine to a standstill, No warning, just stop dead.

The crop is heavy alpalpha/grass mix, I can travel only 3.5 ml/hr with a 105 hp tractor.Any faster, and the tractor starts lugging.
the swath's are as wide as the bine's shields allow, 6'.

the bine is in good shape, there is no mechanical problem, other than the crimper rollers chevrons getting worn.
I have had wrapping on the bottom roller before if the crop was heavy but never the top.
It took the better part of an hour to free the damn thing, and 50' of cutting to plug up again.

Thanks

I found a lot of build up of packed hay on top of the shims, scraping it clean brought the gap to about 1/2".
One other problem i found was that on both ends of the top roller a couple of lugs had torn loose from the steel. i found it this time cause a few strands of hay had stayed stuck in one location there. I believe with spinning rollers the lugs seperate enough to catch some hay that quikly catches more till the whole roller is wrapped up. I cut the loose pieces off.New rollers are 1000 pop a piece, little to pricy to put in a 3000 $ haybine.
I don't know yet if it fixed the problem ,cause i could't cut, rained all day today

Thanks for the reply's fellows

I cut heavy hay all day today with no more wrapping problems.

It sure makes the tractor grunt cutting this stuff.

i had a 990 ih that did that. there was a piece of metal missing in the tray that the cut hay fell into and the hay would fall through that crack and get all tangled up in the roller. the metal part was only 4 inches wide, but without it you couldn't cut hay of any length.

My rollers are actually about a 1/2" and I will add 2 shims on each side for heavy stuff. I have the chevron rollers with the lugs and I believe they are 65". You might have to slow down a little bit. I can usually mow at 5mph with good blades and guards.

Bison-
My haybine will wrap in real heavy hay unless I shim the rolls apart a little more than normal. Only takes a few minutes on my 474. There could be a cut or burr on your top roll that is catching the hay.

How far apart do you shim?
Mine has about 5/8" gap. Do you have deflectors on your rollers?
my rollers are only 4'long
