Hesston 45x0 inline baler...need some infos

First, Ive read thru the inline/Hesston baler threads here but still have question. Not covered in previous postings are baler problem areas, where things break first, areas that need more attention than others, design shortcomings etc. Ideally Id like to hear from owners. The reason Im interested is that I have a line on a very reasonably priced Hesston 4570 and would like some heads up before I take a closer look. From what I saw the other w/e the thing has been stored inside (the paint was perfect) but you can also tell its been used. What should I look for or pay particular attention to? This unit is on a dealer lot as a consignment. According to the salesman it was "run thru the shop" prior to putting it on the lot w/ a $1000 worth of work/repairs. Not sure what they did and the salesman wasnt either. Seems like a lot of work for a unit in such good external condition. Ill get a better idea of exactly what was done this Sat. Any help you would give is appreciated.

I have a Case 8545 and it is the same identical baler as the Hesston 4590. I just bought it this year and am very pleased with it. The only thing I can see that I would want to change would be the speed. It seems to be a little bit slower than the JD 346,348 and the NH 570,575, etc. but all in all it has been a great baler. It suppose to bale about 93 stokes per minute or about 400 bales an hour, but even running it at 540 rpm I still only get about 200-250 per hour. But I still would not trade it. I am very pleased so far. Just my two cents.

Your baler should be running 100 strokes per minute which is faster than either a Deere or NH. In good going we've baled around 350 bales an hour with our 4590 but it takes three good people on the rack to keep up for any length of time. We usually shoot for 12-15 plunger strokes per bale but I've noticed that since we changed from a bar rake to a rotary rake it will bale as nice at 9-10 strokes as it used to at 12-13.

Then what am I doing wrong? I run at 540 rpm and when I push it I seem to either clog or shear bolts. What grade of bolts do you run in your baler and what kind of grass are you baling? I just baling coastal grass. Thanks

This is our second year with a 4590 and we couldn't be happier with it after running NH balers for 20+ years and IH balers before that. We really haven't had any problems with our's so I can't say what to look for other than regular baler stuff like knotters and the plunger bearings.

We bought it used with about 50,000 bales on it and we've put another 15,000 or so through it since we got it last year. I guess time will tell but it looks to me like the inline balers should be alot lower maintance machines than the conventional balers because they have fewer moving parts.

Thanx for taking the time to reply...I talked w/ the salesman again today and he said all the work was done to the knotters. Wow, is that poor maintenance or design? Im going to talk w/ the former owner and see what he has to say and look it over again really good Sat.
