Does anyone know what size tractor I would need to operate a New Holland 273? Thanks in advance,
Craig

As mentioned, live pto & a heavy enough (in lbs) tractor as well as many gear speeds is more important than _just_ hp.

35 or over hp will work, 50 or more will work better.

I bale with a 35 hp tractor & NH 270 baler & pull a hayrack or bale basket on some hills, works very well, but the TA (a shuttle shift hi/lo deal in IHC tractors) giving me 10 forward gears & the independent pto make it a wonderful baling tractor, better than something with 50 hp but only 4-5 forward speeds & no live pto for example.....

C.M.

I use a NH 273 Hayliner on my slightly rolling hills hay fields in Middle TN. I pull it with a 1973 Ford 2000 which has about 35 HP, I think. It loads the tractor down pretty well when I'm going up a hill, but it still works. I don't tow a wagon behind the baler, I just let the bales drop onto the ground and then go back and pick them up with the Ford 2000 and an old hay wagon.

Good luck. My 273 works great.

Other have given you good advice.... But for an example, my Grandpa used a Super H Farmall to pull his NH 276 for years, with a 14' wagon behind. (mostly flat ground) We now use a 7600 Ford, 565 NH, and haybaskets.

Most old square balers work well with 45 hp... You can get by with less, and some can make use of a good deal more, but 45 is a good round number. If you're pulling a wagon behind than you want a fair bit of tractor there in terms of weight to hold it on a hill, and probably a bit more power... but not a lot more would be needed.
I drop them all on the ground, so 45 works fine.

I run mine with a 65HP JD. I also have a bale thrower and pull 16' and 18' rack wagons. I have run it with my 45HP and that made the tractor work. If your just dropping them in the field you could get away with 30 - 35HP I would think. Might want a little more for pulling a hay wagon. Just make sure the tractor has live or independent PTO. Good luck.
