I hate the net wrap . Not biodegradable, small animals get caught in it if you dont get it all cleaned up and miss a piece, and god forbid you wear boots with hooks on them , you'll find your boots hooked together every time you walk through the feedlot, pasture, garden or anywhere else you may have spread manure.

I had a 644 NH , and I could put the twine less
than 3" apart across the bale Just as good as net wrap.

I use both types in my feeding. I prefer the twine bales. I've still got bunches of net wrap hanging on the spreader. It causes lots of problems trying to remove it from frozen hay. I have found there is no difference in storing hay with twine or net. I have both twine and net wrapped 2 year old bales I am feeding now. If I have to use net wrap I will tey to save that hay for the next summers use just so I don't have to fight the frozen wrap.

I believe university research (Missouri) shows no increased protection with net over string. Most of a bales loss comes from the bottom sitting on the ground. James

personally i think nets nuthin but a scam to sell prettier packaging to tha horse nuts...i've had string and net wrapped sit side by side that were baled same day/same pasture...inch under wrapping hay was the same 2 years later...and like was already mentioned its a pain in the a** to clean up.

Pro, hay keeps well in net. Con That netting has to be picked up or it makes a mess all over the place. I used it on my hay one year. After fighting with it during our wet, muddy winters trying to get it off frozen bales of hay, I quit using it and will never use it again.

RodinKS is right. Around here the custom balers want to charge extra to net wrap, but they are just trying to rip folks off and make extra money. When you consider the speed of net versus twine, and how much less wear is on the baler with net (not having to make all those revolutions with full bale) then net is actually cheaper for the custom baler. I had a custom baler give me his prices and I told him I would prefer net, but would not pay more, he backed down and net wrapped without increasing the price. Tom

I have a Deere 567 with the cover edge net wrap option. It takes about 6 to 8 seconds to double wrap grass hay. On twine it takes about 38 to 40 seconds. Roll of cover edge costs about $220.00 and will do approx. 160 bales.
I didn't really think I would like it but now I wish everyone would bale with it. Its so much faster. I also have a 535 with edge to edge net on it. Seems like it takes a litte longer to wrap but its still quick.

I think the locals say it costs about$1.50 per bale. They all like it because it protects against the weather much better. One ag professor I talked to said if you wrapped the string close, I think maybe 2-3 inches apart, the string would protect just as well, but cost more. There is a huge saving in time it takes to wrap the bale. Wrapping more twine would make it a lot longer to cut the twine off the bale when feeding. Taking the net wrap off is not a big problem apparently if you lift the bale on a spear and cut the wrap.

Yes, net is more expensive to buy.... but I wish I had it on my baler so that I could use it anyway. IF you want to push the baler, it will increase your capacity a fair bit, so on that basis, if you're honest about what it costs you to run the thing per hour, it'll pay you anyway.
