NH 276 baler stopped tying a knot

We were baling, and stopped to put some in the hayloft. And then it stopped tying a knot. The twine wouldn't sit in that disc groove. If you pushed it into place, it would tie, and then go back to missing the knot. Any ideas? Kind of urgent to get the rest of the hay in.

Best thing we could figure out was the twine timing is off. We reset the timing many times, , but found there might be too much slop in the worm gear assembly - have to call in the big gun from the ag garage for a house call... That'll be nice and costly, but the hay has to go before the rains come (40% Wednesday).

If not the needle, make sure the twine finger is working properly.

You may have bent the needle. It has to lay the twine in the notch of the disc. If not just adjust the needle to do so. Loosen the back bolt on the needle and tighten the front.

Your desribing twine disc timing. Did you try tightening the nut on the bottom of the cam gear? It could be that the shaft or threads in the nut are wiped out and won't hold tight. The gear is retained on the shaft by a swedge fit - the shaft that drives the gear is tapered. The gear is shimmed to fine adjust the timing. (Typically I've only seen 2 - 4 shims .007 or so each)

Timing is set by loosening the nut, then giving the shaft a tap with a hammer to loosen the taper. You then hold the disc cleaner to the left and align the left side of the notch in the twine disc with the "slot" of the twine cleaner. Tighten the nut at the bottom.

Operate a cycle or two and check operation.

Hope you got it figured out. I'm guessing somethings worn/broken since twine disc timing is one thing that'll stay set.

I had this problem on my Oliver baler, I ended up just cutting new/cleaning up the threads on the shaft and a adding new nut.
