How to secure a hay rack?

Bought a wagon, brought it home and found the deck was just laying on the running gears. How should I secure it? I'm thinking bolt it to one corner, and strap it on the corner of the opposite side on the opposite end. Any suggestions?

I have never had any that were done the way thay all say. Mine were all bolted at all four corners and never a problem with that flexing they talk about, One bed is on a gear that Dad bought new in 1946 and has been bolted that way all the life of the wagon and that beed was before that on a wood wheel wagon for years. And no we never had or would we want a rocking front bolster. I have 11 flat beds here now and all are all bolted at all corners. If you are going to leave one loose at some corners do it on the rear axle so you keep the front tight to the axle at all times.

The wagon box needs to be free to flex, just throw a couple of chains around the opposite corners, back in the 50"s&60"s we started building our wagon beds with a taper in the main rails, mount the rails outside the bolsters in the rear and inside the bolsters at the front, couple of chains on one front and one rear, these were wagons set up for false front silage duty with kicker rack extensions. Still use a couple of them now, just as hay wagons. These where used on steep upstate NY hills.

Bolts are great- if you can use them on your running gear. We've got several that just use pipes for the uprights on the gears, so we chain them on opposite corners. I've also seen brackets made up out of angle iron and such that go around the axle and bolt to the stringer. They allow some float, but don't let it slide back & forth.

Chains work for me though.

Hi , Tradition has the rear bolted and the front secured with a chain or cable . Mine has a rocking bolster in front so I bolted mine in front . I also built it with about 4 feet of rear overhang . By bolting it in front I can't tip the deck off as I load it with hay . But without a rocker having a loose leading axle would be better .

We always bolt just the back of our kicker wagons. Used to use chains in the front, but started using galvanized coated cable. That seems to work very good.

you need to leave one end or the other free to float but just secure enough to where it can't bounce off the frame. if you go across any ditches you should cross them at an angle and in doing that the frame is going to have to be able to move.

Tradition is to bolt both back corners and run a chain around the rail at one front corner and the running gear.
