Large lawn needs dethatching and aeration

I was wondering if anyone has suggestions on the best way to dethatch and plug a acre and a half front lawn. Ive seen all the $80 dollar dethatchers and the agri fab 3 point plugger that sears sells for $250, looks like if it makes it around a coule of times, that would be the end of them, especially if I load them up for hard ground. How about those chain grid harrows, like the 6 by 8 foot ones that tractor supply sells? Would they do an ok job without tearing the yard up too bad? I also have some fields that I need to prep for planting as well. Would like to try to kill 2 birds with one stone here and not wind up with gear that I will only use once or twice (the lawn gear). Plan on mowing the fields close and disking them up and maybe using the teeth on a box blade before the disk. Any suggestions on the lawn or field work, or makes of equipment within a reasonable budget? I usually like to buy once, cry once.

Thanks,

scott#2

I've used a pto powered hay rake to dethatch the lawn. I don't know how thorough it is, but it removed a lot of dead grass. I can't do it now because I've added too many obstacle to the yard in the last few years (trees, bushes, flagpole, etc....what was I thinking?).

Something you might try. Find and old piece of fence about 6 feet long, chain link works well, put some weight on it like a heavy oak pallet, then drag it around. You may be surprised at how well it dethatches and roughs up the sod. It is a very cheap way to see what you can do to the existing lawn.

We use a chain harrow on our pastures to dethatch and break up manure piles. They are fast and easy to use. Don't need much horsepower to pull one. Won't rip the grass out but will rough up the bare ground. I also use one to cover broadcast seed. Seems to work for that as well.
