I'd suggest some hearing protection, I take the ones that are on a nylon string and let em hang around my neck, takes 2 seconds to put em in whether needed or not, you probably were not expecting that backfire, I know the routine, having spent plenty of time on those machines, like the newer diesel ones much better. Hearing, eye protection and the ole hardhat are something good to keep handy. I went to a concert last fall, up in front row with friends, was a little on the metal side of things, and I forgot my earplugs, huge mistake, ears were a ringin for days, still hear that ring at night when it's quiet, not sure if it's related, but never again will I forget those, should have asked the event staff for a pair, not thinking clearly at the time. When you say hat, hardhat or baseball cap ? A hardhat may or may not have helped, could knock it off in a fall like that, I've found that Fibre Metal hardhats (only one I'll wear, union made in USA as well) can be adjusted and or fit well enough that it won't fall off if you lean over almost upside down. I never liked the safety guys who said I had to wear it while in operators station of say like a D8K or something with a heavy R.O.P.S., but I do keep mine handy and wear it when necessary or know I'm at risk, sounds like you should just slow down a bit, thinking and paying more attention to what you are doing, the way things are going. I know some bosses can really put a push on people, but with haste comes injuries, better to work safe. That fall could have been debilitating, a much more serious injury, I'd consider myself real lucky, might want to keep that cut clean, especially this time of year, always better to get it cleaned and closed up, stitched when possible or if necessary, been there too, they can heal miserably and get infected, done that before, boss said ahh it's just a nick, you'll be fine week later it's a swollen mess. Only reason I commented, was from spending many years around hydraulic and many other types of cranes, high rise building sites, supervising crews etc., (not trying to preach) and always taught them to work safe, always something waiting to get you, goal is to avoid as much of it as you can before you retire, be safe !
