I've been thinking about renting a 3 pt PTO tiller and trying it out for renovating a small 3-acre grass hay field across my creek. How well do these work? My soils are loamy with some slate but not too bad, as I have worked my other fields with harrows before.

'ol SOS shines here in reply to Finn Md, 07-25-2007 09:40:11
Everyone on this board it seems like to slam the older SOS equipt tractors. Well I own one and it does have nice low gears for tilling and also the hydraualic clutch PTO, so no gear grinding when engaging, I just love tilling with this tractor. I also think primary tillage with a plow is the way to go. I've done several older pasture and you do need to break up the established sod before using the tiller. bjr

When the SOS worked it was ok, but it often broke and then it was costly to fix.

Most of the newer tractors even the standerds have the lower ground speeds to drive a tiller but some of the older ones don't . I have a friend that has a 8-n & it is too fast to till with so I use my 1715 NH is 9 spd std top spd 12 MPH , to till both our gardens .I also plow them in fall & till in spring .

Thanks for responses. Never seen a tiller used on a tractor before, and a local equipment dealer has been trying to rent them out. Didn't consider the very slow ground speed issue. I think I'll stick with using my trusted harrow after plowing. Finn

I have a 90" tiller I do all my work with here. It is best to get one with a fast tine speed, mine is adjustable. It will not do it in one pass. you need to get the sod broke up. You can do a pass with the tiller. let it sit and re-do in the spring or just before fall. the person that mentioned plowing followed by tilling is the proper way to break a field of sod. By the way the more rocks the faster the tine speed should be, and tractor speed as well.

You will probably wear out a set of tines before you get it tilled. I would plow it first. Hal

years ago we put a 10 footer on a 4-150 white tractor in sandhills of nebraska and broke up sage brush for center pivots. worked great until the tractor got pushed by tiller a couple times and wiped pto clutches out!

Have you ever tried to take a garden tiller and till up a strip across your grassy lawn? You might want to try that and see how it works for you before you go renting a tractor tiller to do a 3 acre hay field.

Plow it this fall then rent your tiller and till it in the spring. You'll come up with a nice seed bed then.

Finn What kind of tractor are you going to put in front of it? We find something like a series 4 D17 Allis Chalmers works well. You can use the hand clutch and get any speed you want from the tractor. Something like an 8n ford may not work quite as well.

A TILLER WORKS MUCH BETTER THAN A HARROW IN MOST INSTANCES, AS LONG AS ITS NOT FULL OF ROCKS IT SHOULD DO REALLY GOOD, BUT YOU'LL HAVE TO GO SLOW.

Many 3 point tillers demand a slower ground speed than you can reach with most tractors unless with a hydrostat transmission. A few will work as fast as 1.5 mph...

They work good in plowed ground. They are not so good in sod.
