JD214 Wire

New to hay my neighbor and I purchased a John Deere 214 with the thought of square baling and selling horse quality hay. Hay is good, but the baler not so good.

It will bale around 8-10 bales, then it does one about six inches longer than the others, and the next one will not be tied on one side (always the same).

Where do I start? Thanks for any suggestions (new baler is too expensive but thanks for that thought as well).

i bale with a jd214w baler. i would first check and see if wire is wrapped around the knotters or twisters. i have had a broken wire wrap itself around the horizontal shafts that cut off the wire. should have four shafts. also if the cutt off shafts are worn you can have the same problem. ..take off the twister cutter assy and inspect for grooves from wire. real easy to remove, remove the two dog legs springs attached to the assy, remove the two bolts on each side and pull upward, whole assy should pull out. this will not effect timing. assy should be free and turn real easy. for bails not uniform. grass is not tall enough or one of the dog legs are broken or the spring is broke. my 214w bales perfect all the time and when ever it fails to bale , i"am out of wire.

Pilothawk did you check ALL wire guide rollers to see if they turned freely and had no flat spots in them? It is also important that no wire guides have grooves worn in them from wire rubbing against them. On bale length: this is determined by measuring arm that has serations on it. Sometimes the serations get worn off or the measuring(star) wheel needs adjusting rearward a small amount to put more pressure on measuring arm. Missed tying: I need more info as to how ends of wire look after miss-tie to help you, Tx Jim
