NH 268 Square Baler toothbar reversed

I have a NH 268 small square baler that has its 2nd toothbar/finger pipe reverse inside the pickup assembly.. this means that the pickup fingers for the hay is actually pointing inwards instead of toward the ground to pick up hay when it rotates around. It is also causing the entire pickup assembly to lockup because the fingers get caught every once in a while.

This baler has 4 toothbars/finger pipes. I disconnected one already because of this same problem but after disconnecting this one I would have only two sets which would slow baling down too much.

My question is, what would cause it too reverse like this? It looks like I will have to unbolt the cam bearing to reverse it back around so it points the correct direction again but am afraid it will occur again. I was never able to figure out the problem with the first one that went out a few years ago. I simply removed the cam bearing on that one and it just freely rotates now and unable to pickup hay with the fingers on that bar but at least it doesn't jam the baler up like it used to then.

Any ideas?

on an ih 440 i had the end plates had gotten loose and would spread apart ever so slightly, but would be just enough to let the end of the tooth support rod ride out and get out of time.

My 268 wears out the bearing on one bar about twice a year. I could never figure out why the same bearing kept going out. When the bearing would go out it would catch in the track that it rides in and stop the pick up. I could never figure out why the same bearing kept going out, but this last time I changed it I noticed that the "L" shaped bracket that connects the bearing to the bar was twisted ever so slightly. I'm hoping a new one of those will solve my problem.

In your case I would start with changing those bearings. They are $11 each and aren't hard to change.

The ones that I have seen come into the shop for this repair have been a worn out cam or a worn out cam brg. I suppose the pins that keep the bars in place could be worn out also.

Thanks for the replies.. I've ordered 2 cam bearings and will replace those to see how it goes.
