third party image

We get ours from the dealer. Not sure how much, but we just got a pack of 10 on Friday for our 12. Should be the same bolt.

It's not a standard bolt either, although I suppose a guy could get away with a normal one if he wanted. These ones have (I think...) a 3/8 shank, 5/16 threads, and a 1/2" head on it, so you need (2) 1/2" wrenches.

i found that on an ih 440 i had to keep the shear bolt real tight and that meant double nutting it so the first nut wouldn't work lose ease. had a lot less problems with it after that. the holes where the bolt goes in can become worn and make the bolt have a little room to play. this makes them shear easy. drill out the hole and get a bushing to go in it and it will stop this problem.

I know a Massey collector at the Le Sueur show that might have a baler sitting someplace that you could rob one off of, just go help yourself, better yet, just take the whole baler.

a grade 2 bolt doesn't shear off clean. so getting the pieces out can be difficult. there isn't many massey dealers around anymore. and all the farms stores dont carry them.

I learned something by accident the other day about changing shear bolts. When I replace a shear bolt I leave the head out about 1" rather than pushing it in completely. When I shear a bolt I can then rotate the flywheel until the holes line up, then drive the broken bolt home which drives out the sheared end and cleans up the end with the head on it so it can be easily removed. Makes changing bolts very quick. Maybe this is nothing new. I'm usually the last to figure out anything.

I Use grade 2 bolt from the local hardware store, I find they brake quicker and therefore save damage to the baler. Last year I had to replace the needles. The bolts are a lot cheaper than the needles. JW

One of our neighbors got tired of replacing the shear bolt on his baler so he replaced it with a hardened bolt. Put the ram through the side, but he didn't shear that bolt!

The Massey 224 we used was forever breaking grade 2 shear bolts, went to get some more at the dealer and it actually uses hardened bolt and thats why there is a hardened insert.

After getting the right bolts, no more broken ones.
