I just got a Hesston 5600 round baler, and it needs new belts. I have a question about widths of the belts.

From my reading, it looks like Hesston originally designed the baler to run 9 4" belts. This baler appears to have been set up to run 3 9" belts and 3 4" belts.

Why would someone prefer 9" belts?

If you run 9" belts as the two outer belts, does that make a tighter bale?

Frankly, I think I'm going back to 9 4" belts unless someone thinks I'm not making a good decision.

I have a 5500 Hesston Rounder. It has 9- 4 inch belts and I can confirm that it is hard to start bales. Based on this information, I am interested in changing the outer belts to 9 inch belts if that will help the bale starting.

Right now, I have to hit the windrows in 3rd gear with it spinning about 1200-1500 rpms. As soon as I get a bale spinning, I gear it down. It can really be a problem though and if there is any way to start bales easier, like 9 inch outer belts, I would give it a try.

Many times the bale will not spin. A block will just sit in the chamber and it will quickly plug the pick-up.

It is easier to start a bale with the wide belts on the outside. If you don't have a big windrow you'll have to start on one corner and be going toward the other corner as fast as possible. The 9" belts allow you to get buy in starting the baler in a less than ideal windrow. If you don't watch and start in a hay like vetch or a roped windrow the baler will draw hay into the bale 2-3' in front of the pickup and can cause the baler to plug when starting a bale. Just do a Google search for "Baler Belts", most of the best wholesalers offer FREE FREIGHT.

Belt source- Hammond or hamilton equipment, Fawnsdale, Al. They advertise in a lot of farm magazines, I've bought from them twice before, always the cheapest, very knowledgeable and helpful, Just wish I could remember the name right!

We had a Hesston 5600 for many years and it had 9 belts on it. It always worked good for us. If you need a manual, let me know. I still have the one for our old baler and it is of no use to me. If you'd cover the postage, I'd be happy to send it to you.
