Hi All , I bought a 40 gallon Fimco atv trailer sprayer for around the acreage so now I'm able to spray for all those thistles and burdock ect. . I went and found the gallon jug of Gordon's Amine 400 2,4,D I bought a couple years ago but somewhere along the line the label fell off and is now not to be found . SOOO , Could someone tell me how much to use per gallon of water , acre , 1000 sq. ft etc ? How much time should elapse before I could cut hay if I decide to spot spray the thistle in the field , and whether or not it kills soft type maple trees and mulberry ( I want them GONE ! )? I'm going to spray in September after last cutting for the thistle in the hay field but I have it in other parts of the property too that I want to spray soon so it doesn't go to seed . Right now it's time to go after the ironweed , burdock , giant ragweed and all the others that would normally be found on a rural acreage in Iowa . Would the amine 400 type benefit from a tension reducer ? Can dawn dishwashing liquid be used for that ? How volital is it in hot humid weather ? ( that means - will the vapors , not the drift , harm other plants , Right ? ) How much drying time before it gets rained on ? Thanks for everything ! ...Randy

For pastures I use a 24D mix with a product called Cimarron. Works great.

Will add one more. I always use a "sticker" with spray. It makes it stick to the plants better. Lots of folks use detergent. Some of the weeds you mention are pretty tough, I prefer to use something stronger than 24D or a mixture with it. Our coop sells "weedmaster" which is 24D plus Banville. I have found in the past 24D will give almost instant success on broadleaf plants, like Canada thistle, but doesn't kill permanently, they will come back. Some of the others will kill permanently. The fun part of 24D or a mixture with it is that normally you can spray in the morning and by evening if not before, you will see the weeds turn their heads over. I have found it has quicker results if used in the morning or evening when plant cells are more open rather than mid day.

I"ve used that Gordon PBI 2,4D product before. I have a 110 spray I use on my 12 acres. I usually mix it as 1 to 2 ounces per gallon and spray as a rate of 20 gallons per acre.

Another PBI Gordon product I use is called PasturePro. I buy it from Tractor Supply. This is what they say about it.

* No waiting period between application and grazing for non-lactating animals when used alone - animals won"t have to be relocated during treatment

* Designed for broadleaf weed and brush control in pastures

* Controls weeds such as thistle, mesquite, multiflora rose and other weeds

2,4,D Amine is used at ambient temperatures above 65F because it does not volatilize off like 2,4,D Ester. Usually you mix 1-2 pints per 10 gallons of water depending on the weed type you are trying to kill but you really need to get the label for your herbicide. Spray at 10 gallons per acre. Try a google serach on the manufacturers's name and see if they have a copy of the label on the web.

Don't take my word for it, but I think amine 400 has 4 lbs per gal. At lease most that I used to use did. So to gt 8 oz per acre, it would cover 8 acres. Or 16 oz per acre, would cover 4 acres. You gota figure the gals of water that the sprayer would put out and mix it to fit.

Think the label probably stated 1 gal per 100 for spot treatments like that. I run something between 3% and a bunch depending on what I'm trying to kill. Just stay away from your garden and flowers. The stuff will volitize and float over the desirables. You can find a 2,4-D label at the link.

Hey Randy! Be real careful with 24D. We used to use it in the berry patch a lot when I was a kid. My Dad suffered with Parkinsons disease for several years. I believe it has been linked to 24D. I no longer trust anything the chemical companys say. Good luck with the weeds.
