Hey guys, a good friend has an older JD #5 sickle mower thats been in his shed for 15 years. Worked fine when stored. It's not rigged for hydraulics, and has "qick-tatch" mounts. Will be great behind my 1940 H. What's a fair price for the #5?

I have my No. 5 mounted to the top of the drawbar, rather than the bottom. In your case, I would take a look at the PTO shaft, and see which way it lines up better. When I tried mounting the flat bar to the bottom, I had too much of an angle for my liking on the shaft.
Now with it on the top, it seems to have much more of a straight line. (My M has 15.5x38 tires)

As far as the wheels go, I dont think you would need to dish them in (mine are dished out), but that could depend on how wide you have them set on the axles, and the width of the tire you are using.
I hope this helps! I can send some pictures of my hookup if you need them.

Used a #5 behind my dad's old 42H for years, until the PTO went out on the H. Then mounted it on my 8N and used for 5-6 more until I got a 3PT mower.

The first #5 we had was really old (2-piece cast wheel) with a 7ft bar. Our current #5 is newer, with a 6ft highway bar. We also have the majority of a very different #5 which came out immediately after the original power mower for the GP and before the design of #5 that everyone is familiar with.

I was lucky enough to also pick up proper factory made mounts for the H, as well as foot lift assembly and the adjustable support which goes from the Rt axle housing to the #5 flat mount bar. The bar makes a big difference in supporting the rt side of the mower, especially when the cutter bar is in the raised position. The H handled the 7ft cutter bar with no problems, even in heavy hay. If you do pick up the #5, I would be glad to send you pictures and dimensions for these H mounting components. Email meif interested.

I'd be really interested in seeing any information you have on mounting a JD No.5 on an IH model H as I'm about to mount one on a Super H. I have the flat bar on the mower and the JD manual showing how to mount the mower on an IH model H or M. But the manual seems to show the rear tractor wheels reversed (dished in), and I'm not going to go through that hassle. Also the manual shows the flat bar bolted to the top of the tractor drawbar, but when I did that the front of the mower wound up about 3 inches higher than the manual recommends. Mounting the flat bar to the underside of the drawbar solved that problem, but I'd still like to see any other information available on mounting the mower.

I don't have any info on mounting to a Farmall H or M. Ours is a JD H.

Looking at the #5 Ops Manual, pg 69, it looks like the H drawbar and supports are hi-lited to indicate they are special or modified. Perhaps it is just the support rods which go from axle housing down on an angle. I'm not familiar enough with the H to really know.

BUT, if it were me, I would block up the mower to specified height, back tractor up, and figure out how to make it work. If it is really that much too high (19-20") you could fabricate some heavy brackets or straps which bolt onto the top of the mower flat bar and then bolt onto top of tractor drawbar. If necessary, make the portion bolting onto the mower twice as thick, with the extra thickness below the bracket and on top of the mower flatbar. This will drop the mower by a measurement equal to the combined thicknesses of the tractor drawbar, the bracket, and the extra spacer. Make the brackets so each has two bolts going into the mower flatbar. (Or should also work with 2 going into the tractor drawbar). I used this idea to mount the flatbar to my 8N 3PH cross drawbar, only had one hole at each end of the bracket, and had real problems keeping the mower in position and sufficient lead on the cutterbar.

Regarding wheel position, I never have adjusted the tractor wheels to fit the mower. Probably couldn't even if I wanted because the JD H and A are both seized onto the splines. You just need to mount the mower so that the inner shoe on the cutterbar is outside of the RH rear wheel. Otherwise the tractor wheel will flatten hay that the mower won't be able to cut. Just my thoughts!!

Sorry I couldn't be of more help

I agree that $200 or less for a working mower would be a good offer.

I paid $100 for a parts mower just to get the Quik-Tatch hitch and yoke.

Parts are somewhat plentiful on eBay and other sources.

A lot of work to spruce one up, but it sure looks nice after it is done.

It will do you a good job behind your H.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Sounds like a good match and at $200 or less I would snatch it up. I would sure like one for my JD 40. Dont get much use, old side delivery rake I just got and have to look for uses for and hay wagons. I could use it on the outside and cleanup as well as along the drive. Luck- Bob

My apologies on the flat bar comment from earlier... I was thinking Farmall H, not JD H.

To answer your question I have seen them upto $500. But as of late sickle mowers are on the out for work. As stated condition is a factor $2-300 seems relistic. They are a good mower with plentiful parts available. Most H had a 5 foot bar not the 6 or 7. Don't forget there is some options (like the shield, hydralics, foot lever, cutterbar options etc) that can really drive up the price.

I have a #5 sickle bar mower on my 40 H. Sweet little rig. You need to add about 200 pounds of weight on the nose of the tractor for good control. Mine is mounted with the quick-tach. I had to alter the tractor side mountings (angle irons with the 1 3/4" pins) by welding a piece of 2" angle on the inside of each mounting which could be bolted to the side of the H draw bar frame. I also built a bolt on live high pressure hydraulic system and put on the tractor for lifting the mower, splitting wood and other stuff I wanted hydraulics for. Sadly I don't get much time to use it anymore. I'm thinking about selling it and other Deeres I have.

A lot of that depends on the state of the wear parts on the mower. Does it need new guards, knives, hold down clips or wear plates? I just went through this a few months back when I ended up buying two #5's, and I paid 360 for both delivered, with a hydraulic cylinder. I had to take parts from both to make one good mower, but even my parts mower is still OK, I could cut brush with it, but it would plug easily in some fine grass.

It would be great behind your H, but you will need to find the flat type drawbar to have it fit your H, unless you weld up some custom brackets.
