It's dry,dry,dry here in N. Maryland. Pastures are brown, and I'm going already through hay I put up for the winter. It' gonna be $10 a bale come winter at this rate.

Anyway, I have a 10 ac hay field that has a pretty good 12 gpm well drilled on it about dead center already for a future building lot. No electricity to it, and I think it's about 150 or so feetdeep. It was put in before I bought the ground, and wells are a use by right for ag, so I don't need a permit.

I have a spare 1/2hp submersible well pump and a 3500 watt portable genny, but I'm thinking it wouldn't be enough and the pump wouldn't last. Don't want to go the whole pressure tank system route.

Anyway, what I'm tryin to noodle out is the best (cheapest!) way to access the water to irrigate the 10ac and maybe salvage another cutting or two this season.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hello, I'm just down the road from you in Caroline county. Trying to establish about 20 acres of pasture on old worn out row cropped sand. So far, I've been lucky and have gotten some of those localized storms when it was much needed. However, I've been thinking of the same thing - how to irrigate.

As a kid, working on truck farm, I remember occasionally seeing a tractor powering a pump with PTO - may be something to think about.

Here are some things I remember from when I used to work with pumps, pipes and valves: Generally, an electric motor will produce twice the work per HP than an internal combustion engine. So, it takes a 10 Horse engine to do what a 5 horse electric motor will do. Yeah, I know a Horse is 550 Ftlb/sec, but it's a bit more complicated than that. Be careful about a condition called "runout". Pumps are designed to have a certain amount of backpressure on them. If you are just "free pumping", you could put a pump in runout where it would work too hard and eventually burn out the motor. I'm talking about big pumps here - the kind of pump you're likely to need to move that kind of water. It's way, way easier to push water than to pull it. If you could pull with the perfect pump, the maximum vacuum it could generate would be about 30 inches of Mercury. That works out to about 15 psi. Think of it as negative pressure. With the weight of water itself causing about .44 psi per foot of height, it doesn't take long before you've sucked it as far as you can. That's where jet pumps come in.

I'm thinking your cheapest bet may be to pump it out of that creek (if you are allowed) and run it through black plastic pipe to your field. At your field, you may need a booster pump to get the head pressure needed for the nozzles. Probably could rent a big pump. If the creek has enough flow, there is a thing called a "hydraulic ram" that basically uses different sized cylinders to pump water for free, but it's low pressure and low flow. I've never seen one in person, only read about them.

Windmill and really, really big bladder tank? The windmill pumps into the bladder until it's full. You add about 10 psi air pressure to the bladder. Use low pressure system to trickle irrigate from the bladder. Don't allow any kids with pins around (PoP!) Or maybe windmill and just move the trickle tape?

Note that although I remember a few things about pumps from when I worked with them, I don't know jack about irrigation.

Take what you want, throw away the rest.

I irrigate my pastures and I supply a 13/64" nozzle with 35 to 40 psi and it puts out 7.5 to 8.3 gpm per nozzle in a 45 ft radius circle. 10 acres is 660 x660, and if you used 40 ft long pipes you'd need about 16 heads which sizes the pump delivery at the design point at~ 120-133 gpm @ ~ 55psi @ the pump.This will take ` 6.5 HP, but they don't make a 6.5 hp pump so you'll neeed a 7.5 hp pump.
You'll need an additional flow margin to fill the lines which means the pump puts out ~175 gpm @5 psi.

You never mentioned the recovery rate for the well. If it'll pump 2700 gallons in three hours - how long before you can take another 2700? 200' is not very deep, but 15 a minute is 900 an hour. Storage tanks??

Y'know, recovery rate is a good question. I don't see any info anywhere on the report.

2700 gal is only .06 of an acre. Lotsa time to move equipment.

I've got a creek on the other side of the property, though it's probably at least a 1/3-1/2 mile way, up and down a couple of hills. The total lift is probably 100'. I cringe to think how much line would cost.

Anybody have any idea what kind of pump that would take? I would guess a 3" line anyway. Anybody got a used pumper truck for sale?

my mom always told me that a well would get better with use. just wondering if you have city water and if the city would be interested in buying water from your well. it might help pay for you hay if they can get enough water out of it. at the rate hay is going to be this winter all over the south it might pay you to have a well digger take a look at it and see what he thinks. he may have a pump that he could sit down on it and pump on it for a while just to see what it would do. also you might want to look around for some used irriagation equipment. this is what, three years in a row that its been dry and if you could swing irrigation and put the fertilize to the ground after each cutting it might pay for itself in a few short years.

Pulled out the well report from when we bought the ground. At 15 gal per minute, the well pumped for 3 hours before it dropped from 50' to the bottom at 200' so that's 2700 gal. It'll take 215,000 gal to put 1" of rain on 10 ac., so I guess I've got a "wishing " well. I'm wishing it was a whole lot better. The lady up the street just dropped one that's 150 gal/min that the town turned into a production well.

We've got a real groundwater problem around here anyway. You can get a well certified for building with as little as 4 gal/min.

12 gallon per minute won't irrigate anything other than a 2 row garden.

A 500 gallon well is very, very poor. 750 gallon per minute is considered minimal to irrigate any acreage at all.

After reading the forum, I guess getting 700,000 gals of water a week out of that little hole in the ground isn't likely.

That unit 1/2 hp wont keep up with a modern home much less irrigate. Get yourself a 6hp or so engine driven pump. they are not real expensive and at $10 per bale would pay out real quick, then you will have the pump as a permanent farm tool. Next year may even be worse. But 12 gpm is REALLY low! To get more water you may have to do what is called perforation. This can only be done by a driller.
