Anyone using a bale accumulator?

I am just a hobby farmer. I work mostly alone. I have run across a bale accumulator that is available. I've never seen one used so I'm wondering if it really is a labor saver. Supposedly the idea is that you hook this gizmo behind the baler and it gathers up the bales as they drop out the back. Then when you have 6 or 8 bales gathered up, you trip a gate to leave them behind in a group. Then when you come back later with the trailer, you only have to stop at a few piles of bales instead of stopping at every stinking bale.

I guess I'm wondering if it works as well as advertised. This is a Farmhand brand if that makes a difference. It's about 200 miles away so I don't want to waste gas on a pig in a poke.

Thanks!

I've never used one, but I just got an EZ Trail bale wagon. This wagon has a chute that uses the energy from the plunger to force the bales up the chute into a big "basket". It holds 90-110 bales. There is a big gate on the back that opens to dump them where you want them. I paid $1800 for a three year old one, new they are about $3K. The one bad thing about them is they don't do well in small fields because you can't turn sharp with them because they will mess up a bale in between the baler and the chute. I just plan out my windrows so I can use this wagon to the best advantage.

they shouldn't do that if you have them the correct distance behind your baler. I ran three of those units for years and never had that problem. The only time it would is if you jackknife the corner. how far behind is your unit and youcan run side chains to solve if wish,

there were other ones and homemade ones. Around here they faded away. They worked good in sparce fields not quit so good on one bale after the other. for that price $200 you can't go wrong.

Actually Farmhand had two versions, one dragged the bales on the ground and you tripped it. The other was a trailer using hydralics. (I just got one up and running). It uses two hitchs and you can back up. Complex as compared to what? Lots of them still in use and most parts can be rebuilt or farm made. Chains etc are available. Grapple to pick them up can be on tractor or skidsteer (my preference). Lots of them in use around here by the "small" farmers. One fellow baled and accumulated 10,000 bales of straw last year with his. Bob

have for several years, would not be without nowdays. Old farmhands have to be really cheap if going to get one of those thou. Parts are to scarce.

I've got the same rig, Farmhand. It eliminates the need for a truck driver. Also if part of your field is too wet for a truck you can dump them on higher ground. If a bale doesn't tie just drag it until the chamber empties and you'll have it in a pile instead of dribbled along the field. And if there is any hay missed there is space enough between the groups to maneuver with the baler to get it. I paid $50 for mine but it needed work. I thought about using it for a pattern to build some but most everybody around here has kickers and wagons.

Thanks for letting me know what you paid for yours. This one is $200 and would cost me another $100 in gas to go get it. I'll keep my eye open locally instead. Thanks again.

Jim, I believe what you are describing is the old Farmhand buncher we used for years, it just drags behind the baler and the bales drop in, when it gets full, 10-12 bales, you yank a rope, the back gate opens and dumps whatever is in it. If you plan it right you dump every other row in line and drive between to pick the hay up. For a small opertion, they are a great rig. There are really only two problems, you can't back up and if you let it get to full, the hay can jam in it. Go for it

Yeah, it sounds like what you are describing is what is in the photo I'm looking at. Is $200 a fair price for an old rusty looking one?

The Farmhand is a complex unit that requires a hydraulic pump to operate it's functions. You can also get a grapple that mounts on your loader to pick the pack of bales up and set it on your trailer. I just recently ordered an Accumul8 from Agway as it is quite a bit more simple than a Farmhand as it is all mechanical. I gave $7600 for my accumulator and grapple that does 8 bales at a time. Here is a link to mine..... .....

Yes they are worth it..depending on price. I to have been looking for a better way (I have two sons that will be able to help me in couple years)they also have attachements for tractors and skidloaders that you can pick the whole pile up at once and place on trailer.
