Hi all,

I'm hoping those with experience with a John Deere 24T baler can help me out. I'm mechanical and handy. my wife and I have been making our own hay for about 5yrs now on about 15 acres. i picked up a 24T for $200 this year (after my NH 271 broke both needles-another request shortly on that one) but am having a bit of trouble with it. after breaking loose the plunger, greasing and adjusting the string tension it worked well, until now. about every 20 bales i break a shear pin on the flywheel. the safety(below the chute)is releasing and wham...add a new shear pin, reset, and it works like a charm. any advice on what may be causing this would be most welcome.

CC,if cleaning and tightening needle brake didn't cure shear bolt breakage I think new brake pads are needed. If nedles were left in knotter look for sheared needle lift shear pin problem. Also check baler timing. Tx Jim

thank for the advice...so here's where I stand...pulled brake apart, cleaned and tightened. that seemed to work for about 3 times as long and then we started breaking pins again. this time, the needled were up in the cutters, almost all the way in or just a finished knotting and barely on the way back. the chute safety tripped and that is what broke the shear pins. any other suggestions? p.s. i should have a manual in a few days, but thought I'd toss out the problem for recommendations.

Our machine would do that now and then. The needle brake was almost always the culprit. make sure it doesn"t get any oil on it.

the problem is a rusty pivot pin on dog that drives the needles and you only see it when it breaks a pin out in one rain is enough the om book and several jd dealer never had a clue. ran one since 1968-now it has a 30ejector.

if the bushing that is pressed into the flywheel that the shear bolt goes through they won't last long, are you buying the special JD shear bolts?

My 24t has done that in the past. almost always because I was running too slow and the needles would not home all the way. They looked like they were but they just didnt quite lock in the home position

We had the same trouble with our 24T. It worked fine but would always break the shear pin if the hay was a little too damp, dad tried to push it too hard, or we tried to make the bales too heavy. Make sure the hay is good and dry. Otherwise you just have to play with it to find the right setting for the tension springs and the speed you can go. Once you get used to it you shouldn't have any trouble at all. Are you using sisal or plastic twine? Not sure why but we always had better luck using the plastic (170-9600) in our 24T.

One thing that will help you is if you order a manual for it. Go to a JD dealer and he will have one or be able to get you one. Either way it sounds like at times the needle arm isn't going all the way home and that will cause that problem

Are the needles home when it breakes? If the needle brake is worn or stuck the needles will bounce when they hit home and alow the plunger stop to come into the bale chamber. So you might try tightening that brake a little bit.

Same happened to me. before tighting the break take apart and clean the disc from rust and crap. esp. if this thing has been sitting around. I also take the break shoe face and LIGHTLY rub them on sand paper "reserface" then reinstall and tighten.

yes, the needles are home when it breaks. generally the knotting has completed and they haven't returned. I'll try tightening the brake a bit first. thanks.
