I need to get a haybine, soon, and on a very meager budget. I know of a NH 479 I can get for about $500,not pretty, but the rolls are in good shape. The sickle is a little rusty, but I was thinking I could clean that up. My concern is the wobble mechanism, in that it looks pretty complicated for someone with limited mechanical skills. The seller is a friend of the family, very good mechanically and he would help me if need be. I fear that if I had to get new parts for some reason, the price would be a big issue.

I know there were an awful lot of these machines built-- they are very popular in this part of the country [northern Wisconsin].

Would it be unwise to get this machine, that said? Would I likely be replacing one worn-out wobble after another? I don't know how those parts age, but I'm afraid that they take the hardest beating on the whole machine.

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Louie

Go for it ! The 479 was one of the best ever produced by NH. Bought mine new in 1972 and it's still going. Change the knife AND the guards at the same time and you've got one great mowin' machine.

I have a NH 479 and before that had a NH 469. Never had problems with the wobble box on either. The worst part of the 469 was the frame actually rusted. If the rolls are good and it's functional, go for it. A NH 479 is a nice machine. Get an owners manual and make sure you keep the oil levels full and grease it frequently. After you cut blow out ALL the hay chaff to keep that frame and skid shoes clean. BTW, I paid closer to $1800 for mine but the rolls are awesome, the paint is good and it had a new sickle bar on it. The knives are inexpensive and that is one one maintanance item I do like every other year. The NH 479 should have bolt on knife sections, rather than those darn rivets. Happy mowing.

I rebuilt mine 2 years ago and I think it cost me $150 but I put a new belt on at the same time.
