I have a six foot Bush Hog rotary mower that I use to control weeds between rows of trees. It swings a bit on my 3 point hitch. Not a problem when cutting a field but could take out a row of trees in a hurry if I'm not careful. Is there a way to stop the swing?

YOU NEED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. IT IS NOT SAFE TO OPERATE YOUR CUTTER IN THIS WAY. WHAT MODEL BUSH HOG DO YOU HAVE? YOU SAID THAT YOUR LOWER ARMS HAVE CHAINS TO KEEP THEM FROM SWINGING OUT. THERE SHOULD BE A TURNBUCKLE TO TIGHTEN THEM ONCE YOU ARE HOOKED TO THE CUTTER OR A PIN ARRANGEMENT TO DO THE SAME.

You should tighten the chains that go between the axel and lift arms with the bush hog in the down position.

Are you using sway bars? If not, that'll fix your problem. If you are using them and it still sways...well, humm, what kind of tractor do you have?

I'm new at this. Not sure what a sway bar is. I have an MF 231s. The only connections to the mower are the top link of the 3 point and the 2 lower arms. The lower arms have chains that allow them to move back and forth.

Sway bars are a second set of 'arms' that connect to mounts further outboard on the rear axle and link into the 3 point arms...

There may or may not be the mounts for them on a
231.... Usually bolted to the bottom of the fender mounting bolts...

Help keep things from swinging around.

In my opinion a 231 is a bit light for a 6' bushhog. Do you have trouble keeping enough weight on the front wheels ?

I've only got about 3 hours on it with the Bush Hog but it hasn't seemed to be a problem. I'll have to call the dealer and ask about the sway bars.

I use chains with my 3pt hitch mowers. But I have extra sets of shackles. After I hitch up the mower, I 'snug' the chains up with the other set of shackles. Sometimes I have to drive and turn the implement 20 feet so that I can snug the opposite side.
