I deliver grass fed beef by using 1 or 2 freezers in the back of my pickup. I have been pulled over twice this week on different highways. No tickets were issued. One said I was going too slow and weaving. The other said I didn't pull to the left when I passed him parked along the highway. I think I was acting the same as the cars in front and behind me. are the freezers drawing attention to me? Do some drug compounds need to be kept cold?

The last time I got a ticket I was driving home and I was almost at school when I thought I had a green light and went left - no one was around. I had been going 55mph at night down the interstate and I think the State Trooper was following me home and I was pulled over. In retrospect I probably should have thanked the guy as I suspected to myself I might have been falling asleep at the wheel.

140 bucks is a far cry from the costs of a funeral or hospital bills if there had been someone there if I had run the light. For that I am grateful even if it did set me back some money.

There are some Peace Officers that are jerks but the majority of them are good people doing their best to protect the public from stupidity.

Also, in most states, its the law to pull to the right or left depending on the situation for emergency vehicles.

To the persons posting some support of law enforcement: Thank you! To the persons posting negative remarks: Try to use some logical and objective thinking before you post. Most law enforcment personnel are honestly trying to do the right thing. Even the so called bad ones you talk about could take a bullet protecting your rights or property the day after they wrote you a ticket. The freezers and four wheelers could all have been stolen and they were going into harm's way to check on them. They could have just sat around at the doughnut shop. Instead the decided to pull someone over and risk their lives. I know several dead or wounded law enforcement officers
who have made that sacrifice for all of us.

Yes there is a happy medium here and i have had several relatives ,including my grandfather whom i shadowed till he died when i was 5 and got my love of farming and tractors from. Most honest citezens dont think like criminals, that is why we are often shocked ,surprised and angry when we get pulled over. And yes everyone is a criminal until the officer is satisfies they are not and not a threat to him. We just lost a state trooper in northern indiana in such an instance. The details of which will probably never be known to all or the public. The police seem to forget there are professional truckdrivers out here who have to make a living and while we made speed sometimes because of the shippers and recivers and uninformed dispatchers, that we still have more experience and are safer on the roads than many of the illegal aliens the big comppanies will replace us with when we lose our liscenses to speeding when the road and conditions are safe for driving at the higher speed. Wait till the aliens make up the majority of drivers. ou think the carnage caused by them is something now , you aint seen nothing yet.my last two tickets were from the same cop !Starting to look like disability is the way to go.i have had trucks pulled over 2 days in a row and "inspected".One was pulled off the road and fixed and the truck the next day was perfect.Makes it real hard when you support the police and then it seems like they are preying on you then next. Yes i shouldnt speed and try my best not to including using the cruise control which i never used to do.But when they seem to show you no mercy and take food out of your mouth we get fed up.Indpls here was using a construction project with signs you couldnt possibly read all the info on in the few seconds you had to raise revenue from the citezens by the thousands. no wonder truckdrivers have quit stopping to assist at accidents before the police and fire arrive. It was a truckdriver who helped a trooper subdue the guy who he was trying to arrest on an on ramp , yet the next minute we are enemies who must becontrolled at all costs. for me this is really hard with friends and relatives on both sides of the coin.Real hard.!! sorry so long but maybe if i speak up now i can make things better for all i hope and pray.

We had a local City Chief killed a few weeks ago by a drunk that he knew and had helped many times in the past. Somehow the guy got a hold of Chief Randy Lacy's gun from the back seat of the cruiser and killed Randy dead. I have known the Lacy family for years and were all great people. There are bad cops the same as bad carpenters or bartenders, but for the most part they are people too.

Tim- Professional drivers are an absolute pleasure to deal with. I make it a habit to make my inspection as quick as possible because it's coming off your hours, not mine, and it wasn't long ago I was working for $5.00 and hour. So I know what you mean. But I resent having all cops lumped together with the occasional bad apple. It would be the same as lumping ALL truckers in the same catagory as the illegals or unqualified drivers out there.

There are a lot of keyboard commandos here that love to tell everyone just how they'd do it if only they had a chance. I'm tired of it. The ignorant morons can go find another place to spread hate and discontent.

You're right . There are good on both sides and we ALL do tend to lump people together as a form of self protection .Like avoiding a open flames if you have been burned. But only if we can air our opinions and differences can we overcome the walls that keep us apart. Most people do not understand how police are trained to think and react to situations, even if it is in both parties best interest. I always though retired or off duty cops who wanted a part time job should teach drivers ed. If you've ever rode with a friend or relative thats a cop they all drive fast and extremely smooth. The police with the dark miltary style uniforms tend to present an image to the public that i always thought was not beneficial to the police.A lot of people see situations or have crimes committed against themselves and dont even report them anymore. Or only call the police when they need a report filled out for an accident or something insurance related. We have helped them rid our neighborhood of several drug dealers in the last 11 years .And if no one was disturbed by their stupid loud radios or stealing or blocking streets and alleys, most people wouldnt have even bothered to report them. Some were out of state big boys! Its a shame it has come down to this. Of course the cop on the beat is not to blame for all of it.They are often the only ones dealing with the reality while their higher up play politics. Its as frustrating for us as it is for you.we do appreciate what you try to do.stay safe!

Standing on the side of the road, a Metro zooming by might not appear as intimidating as a big pickup & trailer zooming by, even if both were about the same..... .

Commercial transportation - your buisiness rig - has to live up to more DOT regulations than a fellow tooling around in their pickup & boat trailer. Right or wrong, that is how things are.

I'd be careful getting too upset about it. Got your trailer lights all right, brakes, fire extinguisher, triangles?

Most cops are all right, & apply the laws to the situation. As a commercial venture on the highways, you likely get more applied to you now.

Some cops are overbearing, that trait does come out in their profession. Other side of the coin.

Police officers are NOT your friend in an encounter... they are investigating a crime or possibility of a crime... though you may not be an "official" suspect, you are still a suspect... proceed with caution whenever conversing with a police officer and know your rights...

It only takes one bad apple to spoil an entire team"s image in the eyes of an individual. Some officers forget who they work for and where they get their power and liberally abuse said powers... many don"t.

I once was pulled over... On my way from a customer"s place of business going to a friends house with a broken sterndrive from my boat and parts to put it back together. I was pulled over because i turned the corner too slowly as the officer passed me going the opposite direction (he said i crossed the white edge line... there is no white edge line at that corner... I"ve checked...) and I was driving my old farm truck. He followed me for a mile then decided to do his thing.

Alone at the intersection of a desolate country road crossing, just him and Me.. after 20 questions and not getting anywhere he asked if he could search my truck and became extremely agitated when i denied him and refused to answer any questions to his satisfaction. After 20 more questions, fishing for a reason to arrest me (think stolen items in my truck because I look liek a poor farmboy and surely I must have some form of illegal weapon concealed) asking me to exit my vehicle and intimidating me by threat of handcuffs and a trip to jail I broke out a pencil and paper from my pocket wrote down his name and badge # and informed him I would be contacting my lawyer and we would be making a formal complaint. He abruptly gave me back my ID, insurance and registration and let me be on my way... the next morning I was standing at the sheriff"s department filing a formal complaint. He didn"t lose his job but he pushed a desk with reduced pay for a month... I wanted his badge...

I learned something valuable... know your rights... Don"t let anyone intimidate you...

by us there are getting to be more and more meth labs showing up. the hoodlums are stealing anhydrous ammonia to make the stuff. they arested some guys a couple weeks ago that stole anhydrous and had it in coolers in the back seat of a car. real brite bunch. could be the cop was just checking you out to see if you were up to something with the freezers in the truck. cop could of even thought there was a body in the freezer. i'd hate to be a cop nowadays with all the nuts out there.

Yes i saw lights around my neighbors tractor around midnight and went to check it out by myself anf unarmed. It turned out he works like me and has to work at nighttime late too.Thoe methheads and crackheads will tell you , they wished they never had touched that junk. They are hooked from the get go in most cases and the stuff is dangerous to make not only for them but who ever comes upon the site.but the production of it has gone down with the moveing of cold meds behind the counters and making them sign for it.But if the cop had explained to the poster why he was looking , he probably would have let himn go ahead and look.but it is also our right in this country to refuse. YOu're danged if you do and danged if you dont. Most cops are regular hard working folks like ourselves . Like the one told my mom years ago, cops are like rosesbut you always got some thorns.

If you got pulled over for whatever reason, why not just co-operate and you'll be on your way in a minute. And yes, people do transport all sorts of bad stuff in rigs like you described. Aren't druggies "bad guys" too?

FWIW- I'm sick to death of the keyboard hero's around here hiding behind the anonymity of the internet and running their mouths. You have a responsibility as a citizen to work within the system and try and keep crime down, just as I have a responsibility to treat you respectfully. Like old says you need to make a big phucking stink about it. Police should be out looking for bad guys, not stopping honest citizens. What about the people breaking into places and stealing stuff, stealing gas and copper wire, cooking or selling drugs, all that crap? These are the people the cops should be after, not someone hauling a freezer down the road. I got stopped one night a year or so ago because I was hauling my 4 wheeler on a trailer and the lights weren`t working. Barney told me there had been some 4 wheeler thefts and he was just checking. The SOB didn`t even mention that my lights weren`t working. I should have raised hell with the sheriff cause it was one of his boys that harassed me, but I was too nice and let it go. If there had really been some 4 wheeler thefts, they should have been out trying to solve those crimes and prevent more, not stopping me, even if my lights didn`t work, what difference did that make? People could see my truck lights! Cops got too much power to just pull average people over cause they want to. They need to be catching criminals, that`s what I think.

Maybe the cop that stopped you was just being nice too and that's why he didn't give you a ticket for no lights. If it was your 4 wheeler that was stolen wouldn't you want him to investigate that? You not having working lights gave him probable cause to pull you over and check your DL. When he found you to be the legit owner of the 4 wheeler he cut you slack. Instead of cursing him you should be thanking him since you were'nt ticketed or worse made to have the trailer towed away. Exactly how does a cop tell a honest citizen from the bad guy? Did you have your halo on high beam? You should count your blessings.

Stinky Cheese- That is really a pathetic post. The police are out looking for bad guys, stopping innocent citizens (or may appear to be) is a way to stop criminals! You know, some criminals actually appear to be "honest citizens". And lets see, cop said there were some ATV thefts in the area and they pulled you over with an ATV? Hmmmm... sounds like he was doing his job to me. How did he know that the ATV you had wasn't stolen? If it was my ATV that was stolen, I would be very glad that this particular cop was doing his job.

You need to go re-read your post and think about it a little more. Stop acting so ignorant.

Sounds like b.s. to me. The law here states either ove over OR slow down.Did he ask to look in the freezers. As a truck driver i'll warn you. watch out for the first of the month ,some space in the middle and then end of the month. They have to meet their"expectations" as they call them or quotas as the public calls them.Al the function as is a revenue collector for the state. They do try to make some drug busts or find illegals being transported in. I just cant believe they pulled you over without giving you a ticket!lolI have had one or two just give me a warning for going to slow once . Another one said"he just seen me sitting there so he'd check and see if i was alright".And make sure i hadnt ben drinking or transporting any drugs. lol

Tim- I inspected about 600 trucks last year. I pulled over probably another 3-400 that had CVSA stickers or had been inspected recently. Would you prefer guys like me pull you over day after day and keep inspecting you, or use a little common sense? And shouldn't we be checking to make sure some trucker on the side of the road isn't having a heart attack or something? If you want a ticket everytime you get pulled over I suppose you should ask for one.

I just want to be left the hell alone.

I don't want to be stopped while going on my way, minding my own business. I don't want my Liberty interrupted or challenged. I don't want to be searched or talked down to. I don't want to have to answer to any stranger...uniformed or otherwise, as to my whereabouts or my business, or if I have any firearms in my vehicle.

We are free in this country only until a man with a badge decides you won't be. You will bow down, answer like he expects you too and kiss his/her posterior or you'll quickly learn that your Rights aren't worth the paper they are written on. I've been there.

Hey Bret!

I'm fine and glad that you are too.

I've been busy playing with my old Farmall, raising a big garden and mowing grass:). The kids and I made a trip down to NC to visit my folks....sniffed out a nice old D17 Allis..... got to check on it next trip down. I rebuilt my equipment trailer but can't afford the HIGHWAY LEGAL tires right now (it was built on house trailer axles). I never could figure out how tires were good enough to haul a 25,000 lbs. house trailer down the freeway but illegal for a utility/equipment trailer! Anyway...when the extra coins appear, I'll reshod the trailer and may try to buy that old Allis for a winter project.

My shooting/casting/reloading gear has drawn lots of dust. Might get the bug again someday, in the meantime, it's not eating anything. How's are new kids doing? growing and happy, I hope.

A D-17! One of my dream tractors is a 17 diesel from the late series. What a classy rig. Good luck on that.

Things are busy here. I don't know if you recall but we took in 4 foster kids and they are learning farm life involves work! At least we have a decent garden this year. Gotta few more Gravelys to help out there, not like my old collection though.

You can see I still have that urge to stand up and make a pain of myself, HAR! Not that YOU'D know about that. That ol'respect thing still works both ways.

Don't know if you stop by "home" or not, but I'm trying to get a site going at www.stopguncontrol.info. Give a hand if you can.

Nice to know you're around pal.

Tim- I can"t recall the last of the 17 series #. 4 maybe? I"d like the one with the white stripe and all the bells and whistles, or such bells and whistles as they had. Found one fairly local. Close to 5 grand and it needed tires, paint, etc. Too rich for this po"boy. Northern NY is tough on tractors.

Gravely stopped the traditional walk behinds some time ago. There are thousands of L models and the late Kohler engined models around. Fine machines for the small land owner/truck gardener/homesteader. I think a lot of guys would be far better off with a Gravely than a L+G tractor, assuming they could find attachments. But lets face it- without a 3 pt, cup holder and CD player most guys wouldn"t want anything to do with them.

If you google Gravely club you"ll find a bunch of sites that cover them.

I'm with Bret4207 on this one. At the risk of sticking my nose into what seems to be a fairly volatile exchange, I've got to say that I'd rather have police officers pull over any and every "suspicious vehicle". For the minor inconvenience it will cause me should I wander into their sights for some reason, it may save some city from a mushroom cloud. Let's give these guys a break. They run the risk of getting killed every time they make a traffic stop. For every one bad apple there are probably a million good cops. They bust their collective butts to make sure the sun rises for the rest of us every day.....

my two cents...

Don't agree with the million to one, maybe more like 25 to one. In my opinion many are trigger happy, oppressive individuals, whom desire to be in a power position over others. The highway patrol isn't the problem, it is the local police, and occasionally the county boys. In the inner cities who knows what graft is occurring.
I went thru a local town several weeks ago while coming back from the farm. I was covered with sweat, oil and grease, therefore wasn't using my seat belt. Being very tired I wasn't watching close enough, and was pulled over for not having a seat belt. Apparently he had followed me thru town to see if I would make any additional violations, more particularly violating the posted speed limits, which I had obeyed. The fat pig sauntered from his air-conditioned, gas-guzzling SUV to give me a ticket. It was 90 degrees and I wasn't using A/C. After handing over the ticket, he started to tell me what needed to be done with it. I replied that I could read and already knew exactly what needed to be done with it. Furthermore he had better waddle back to his A/C before the heat caused him to pass out. Also I didn't want him to miss any opportunity to capture more desperate criminals by spending any additional time with me. The parting shot which I'm not sure he entirely heard because he was walking back was: it is comforting that I could afford this ticket and any additional ones, but if the situation was reversed it might be a little tough on your salary. Didn't use any cuss words, but obiviously he knew I wasn't happy. Debated on pleading "not guilty" and hope he didn't show at court, but average court costs are around $140 which is not a good gamble on a $55 ticket. I can bypass this "tinhorn" town by driving an extra mile and if I get another such ticket and that will be the action plan.

I too have been pulled over. It was usually for a light out somewhere or something of that nature. I was stopped once by a State Trooper for an expired plate. I knew good and well that plate was good, for I had just renewed it a couple months earilier. He gave me a warning and sent me on my way. He also ask if I had any Mexicans helping me on the farm, and I told him I did have 4 that helped me. He then said for me to check their cars and my sticker may be on one of their cars. Lo and behold that is right where it went. I repossesed it on the spot. Had another trooper stop me from speeding once, I was running 58 in a 50 MPH zone. He ask what was my hurry and I informed him that I was having a flat tire. He humm hawed around and I told him to give me a ticket or let me go as I was trying to get to the tire place before it closed at two. I just had them put on new that morning. He then told I was driving my old 77 Ford to fast for an old truck. I did ask him if the speed limit was different for old trucks than for new ones, he said no and sent on my way. My point is that you guys and most cops(not all) are just doing what we as citizens ask you to do. This is a tough dangerous job that most folks wouldn't have includung myself. I have nothing to hide, and if my tail lights don't work at 11:pm, I need to get them fixed and have ask to be warned about it by driving it in the dark. If you stop me I will be nice and polite as long as I am treated well. They found 5,000,000 in uncut coke in a piano, so it could have as easily been in a meat cooler. Be careful and stay safe. Keep stopping suspicious vehicles.
