Thanks for the responses on the 241. My cousin has a 214 JD that is shearing pins at the flywheel. It is hitting hard at the end of the stroke. Mostly when the chamber is empty. With hay in the chamber it isn't so hard. Kinda of erratic. May bale 1 bale, may bale 6. Some slop in the ram, drops at the end of the stroke and lifts when returning back. Hope that makes sense. Hope to see more when we get the bales out of it. Any ideas what to look for? Took about 40 shear bolts to get @ 150 bales done. He's pretty hardheaded. He's wanting to change it over to a PTO driven and get rid of the wisc.4 cyl. TIA

Check needle brake to be sure pads are not worn out. If it shears flywheel pin running empty then I'd look for a bad plungerhead roller. Have you checked needle timing? Tx Jim

Yeah, initially the needle brake got out of timing and we managed to get that timed right with the help of a local old timer. He got us to the point we're at. He didn't mention worn pads, so I'm assuming they're alright. I'm thinking the plunger head has something wrong at the leading edge. Until I can get my cuz to empty it, I'm stumped. Did I mention he's hardheaded? (%^)

You got my curiosity on this one. I just bought a 214WS; haven't used it yet due to the "monsoon season" we've had. The guy I got it from said to keep some shear bolts; this one shears them occasionally. Mainly if you got into thick windrows. He was just using regular 5/16 bolts; the manual I got on ebay says use "special bolts." Just wondering if that's John Deere's "thing" to sell bolts or if they should be a different grade (maybe grade 5 or 8)?

We used everything from stainless to tempered, grade 3-8. Some may last longer, but they still broke. He even reamed out for 3/8" bolts. Windrows varied in size but it seemed to break most when the chamber was empty. Well oiled.

Sounds like you need to adjust the plunger bolts to take the slop out of it...if you look on the pivot arm side of the plunger, there are adjustment bolts that you use to take the slop out of it...

The plunger is probably binding up enough at some point while its banging around to break the shear bolt.

I had a 14T, and used 1/4 inch grade 8 bolts in it, it would normally only break the shear bolt if we tried to stuff to much hay in it at once.

They are to take the slop out of the plunger as it travels, as I remember there are 4 at the rear corners and 4 at the front corners of the plunger...probably buried in hay and grease, may have to dig around to find them, they are good size, 1 inch heads or so on them if I recall.

I had to adjust those on the 14T I had, it ran much smoother afterwards.

This has some on the top left? side (looking from the rear)that we tightened to see if it would help, it didn't seem to do anything. There were none on the other side. I'm still waiting for him to remove the hay to see whats happenin'. Later.
