The gearbox on my "70s or "80s vintage 5" Sidewinder brushhog is leaking. It is in the sticks so I won"t be able to use power tools. Can I replace the seals without pulling the gearbox off the cutter deck?

everybody keeps refering to a vent plug. mine didn't have one on it, so i tighten the plug down where it would stay normally and marked the flat side that was down. i took the pipe plug off and drilled a small hole in it and put it back on. with the hole always down i don't get any trash or rain in it even though it sits outside. i don't know if they make them or not. if you wanted to, i guess you could make the hole a little bigger and put a piece of stainless steel mesh wire in it to keep trash out.

I worked on my squealer out in the woods, started raining cats/dogs shortly afterwards but might have been coincidence, highly recommend putting an old sheet or tarp underneath to catch anything that falls out

when I got the big nut off, everything headed south in a hurry, caught most of the pieces but one of the bushings got past me, after that it leaked real bad until dealer showed me the schematic, I put the bushing back in upside down, been fine since

Many times, if it is a smooth input shaft.. AND it is just a weak seal ( plugged vent cap made it blow out? ).. then yes.. you can snatch it ans ea another.

however.. as another poster mentioned.. if the seal died because you have a bearing going south. then I'd want my shop nearby..

Pull the drive shaft of fthe input shaft.. got motion side to side onthe shaft? if so.. beairng is dieing.. if not.. snatch the seal and repalce.. or add some thick grease to the oil mix and get by another few seasons..

Check the vent plug.. sometimes they get stopped up, and pressure causes the seal to blow out or leak..

Mine started leaking about two years ago. I stopped it by buying some JD Cornhead grease and using that instead of oil. Good stuff and I haven't had any problems since. I also use it on the gearbox of my rake and baler (gathering forks)

you probably have a bearing in it that is bad. i don"t think thats something you wouldn"t want to do without being close to a shop.
