Not much help with your baler, but dad bought a new 24T in '64 and it still works as good as new. We only took it into the JD dealer once for a "check over" one winter. Doesn't miss a bale, maybe sometimes when it changes to a new ball of twine.

George the knotters and needles are driven by same mechanism which is a spring operated dog on shaft. Check dog mechanism for wear. Tx Jim

How much slop is there in the chains? If they are worn, lots of bad and hard to diagnose things happen, hard to keep timed, etc....

It could be possible the needle brake is too loose. Do the needles not come home too?

Only a guess, but are all the roll pins that hold the gears in good shape. Possibly one is sheared inside and catching enough to drive but not completing the cycle.
