#5 Mower, wheel broke off. HELP

Droppin a friends field yesterday with my trusty No. 5. He let some neighbors come in with quads over the summer and rut it up pretty bad. I was backing up and the rear wheel fell into a nasty hole just as the tire rotated perpendicular to the mower. Yeah that baby folded like a cheap tent.

So anyway I dig up all my literature and apparently my rear wheel is totally different from all the other pics. Perhaps the guy my father bought the mower from years back had retrofitted it? Can anyone tell me if this is an original design and how I should go about getting the 2 new pieces. Im in Mass and there just isn't much for parts up in these woods. Here are a few pics

It almost looks like the wheel you have on the mower now came off of an IH #11 mower... I doubt one of those is easier for you to find, but it could be something else to look for in the way of parts...

For parts try Frys in PA.# 1-570-546-3968 OR Sharps 1-888-674-2777. good luck.

The tail wheel pictured above is one of the correct type of wheels for the JD #5 mower.

This type of wheel will occasionaly appear for sale on eBay.

You might consider another tail wheel from a parts rotary cutter if you are unable to locate a JD tail wheel.

Your broken tail wheel looks like it came off a rotary cutter.

Cast iron can be repaied, but it might not be as "strong" as before.

Hope this helps.

Where are you in MA? I have a friend here in Southern NH who has a few spare #5s sitting around, but I don't know if I can convince him to part with one. (We call his place the "One-Way Farm" because stuff comes in in groups and never leaves). We are on the border just west of Nashua. Drop me an email

The rear wheel on my #5 is entirely different. Mine looks like an upside down question mark with one shaft coming into the wheel from the side.

Also, #5 mowers apparently were built by the millions. It's almost impossible to go to a farm auction out here without stumbling over one.

However, yours appears to have a "fork" type bracket with the axle going through the center. My 3 point shredder has the same setup. Anyone with a stick welder and an iron pile should be able to fabricate a new one in an hour or so.

Its cast so I cant weld it. I was thinking I could braze it instead. At this point I either need to find a whole arm and wheel assembly or locate a replacement piece for the one that broke.

Thanx for all your input guys. This forum is very helpful. Im sure I will be able to get a bunch of answers about my stuff later on as I need it. Parts are getting harder and harder to find lately in my area.

You certainly CAN weld it with nickel rod, after first pre-heating it.

Well I took a closer look at the unit and it appears it was a custom build. I have no idea of knowing what implement my broken axle pieces came from. I guess Ill have to track down a whole wheel assembly somewhere. Anyone have anything on here perhaps?

Any old weldors in your area? That looks to be an easy fix for someone experienced in welding.

I have seen a lot of #5 JD mowers, but never have seen one with the type of wheel you have. It would appear someone has changed it from the original. I would think you could get a whole assembly including spindle to replace your assembly.

There were lots of number 5,s sold. Looks like you would be able to find a parts mower. They should outlaw those damn 4 wheelers. I have trouble with folks sneaking in on me with them, and tearing up the place, cutting fences and throwing their beer cans all over the place. Some of them are my own relatives, who think they have the right to trespass on me just because they are related. I have considered having a couple of them arrested for it.
