3 Point Bale Spear

I just started using a 3PH bale spear to move around the few bales I handle and often times the spear wants to to tip the roll over backwards before it"s fully inserted. It will go in about half or maybe two-thirds of the way, then start to push it over.

I"ve tried point the spear slightly up, slightly down and level. I"ve tried spearing it in different areas of the roll. I must admit I feel a littls foolish because it seems like it should be such a simple task, but I would appreciate any suggestions more experienced users might have.

I have a thin forged steel spear for my loader and a 2 inch diameter, rather blunt spear on my three point bale spinner and I have no trouble penetrating big bales with either one. I just try to hit them level at dead center and have not has any problems

You probably have the same kind of 3-point spear I have, that is made of a piece of pipe about 2" in diameter and tapers down on the end. Trouble is, on certain bales that piep is just too dang big. My front spear that goes on my loader is a piece of solid forged steel that is only an inch or so in diameter and it can stick any bale without the problem you are having. I am gonna get rid of that 3-point spear made of hollow pipe and get another forged skinny one like I have on the front and that will solve that.

What kind of spear is it? I've had the problem with homemade spears that weren't very sharp but now I've got almost every thing changed over the the super penetrator spears and they have solved the problem.

You might try to pick them up from the other end, sometimes that will make a difference too, Don't know why but works for me. Good luck!

I've had that problem, too. I found that putting the 3-pt. in "float" mode (pushing down on the hydraulic control) just after the point enters the bale allows the spear to float a little up or down which compensates for the spear not being perfectly aligned with the axis of rotation of the bale.

I have had that problem on tight bales myself. I had the put the spear toward the outside. I have had bales that I had to turn on the end and push the spear down with the loader.

real tight bales are tuff to spear...sometimes dropping point below center by 5-6'' helps...i also keep spear level and hit bale pretty fast...a little speed helps to get thru tite spots.
