Dan,

It seems to me that you probably want to find a tractor with more horsepower, live PTO, and live hydraulics.

If you wanted to stay with the Fords, which are inexpensive to purchase, parts are relatively inexpensive, and are very very reliable, you might want to look at a Ford Powermaster 861 or 881 (hp is low-mid-40s).

The next logical step up would be a late model 4000 (low 50s PTO hp) or a 5000 (mid 50s PTO hp).

The rule of thumb for a plow is 12hp + 1,000 pounds/per plow bottom. However, that depends on how fast you want to plow. Many farmers today require much higher ground speeds than say the 3mph of an 8N plowing. To the best of my knowledge, you"d need a tractor in the 75-100hp range to run a 5 bottom plow. The Ford hundred series are rated for 3 bottom plows. You should be able to pull a 4 bottom with the 4000 and 5000, 5 bottoms if you have light soil and are willing to keep your ground speed low on the 5000.

I believe the rule of thumb for a chisel plow is 25hp per chisel. Obviously, you can work around this if you are patient and careful with your equipment.

Hopefully some other folks will add additional thoughts (and correct me if I am wrong with my numbers)

Colin, MN

Not to knock the little old Fords but they are nothing more then a mechanical horse- no live pto, low power etc etc. Spent many hours on them and they are uncomfortable in my opinion. For all you are needing to do, you would be better off with at least 40hp to run your rototiller and backhoe. Live pto, live hydraulics would help, as well as power steering for your loader. Where are you located? Might be a good idea to visit with your neighbors and see what they are running, and chase down leads on implements they may have.

Thank you for your reply. I'm getting the sense that for all the attractivenes of owning a vintage tractor they may not be up to handling all the jobs I want done. Do you have a suggestion about what older model JDs or Fords could handle the jobs. Thank you Dan Fisher

My plan was to renovate a 25 acre hayfield. The land has not been used for 100 years. Neet to stump, bushhog and plough the property.

If you get an 8N my father has the following that he might sell: Front Loader, Bush Hog/Shredder, disc plough
The 8N was only designed for a 2 bottom plow, he has some 2 bottoms as well.
They would be located in Nebraska.

Local farm auctions will be far and away the best place to find implements.
An 8N Ford won't have live or independent PTO or hydraulics so it won't be very good for using a loader, tiller, blade, brush hog, baler or any mower, and for a back hoe you would need a extra hydraulic pump and really a heavier tractor to hold it, also it is a 2 plow tractor certainly not a 4 or 5 plow tractor. A 1954 JD would be a most likely be a 40, 50, 60, 70 or 80 model. The 40 had 22 drawbar HP, the 50 had 27, the 60 had 36, the 70 had 44 and the 80 had 61 drawbar horsepower. The 40 and 50 are nice lawn mowing tractors, but the 60 and 70 are big enough to do some tillage work in my opinion. Good equipment for the little tractors can be hard to find and much of the new equipment is very lite duty, almost toy as compaired to the original stuff. Good luck.

There are a LOT of tractors better suited to field work than those you mentioned that were made before the mid `50`s. Ford 4000`s made from 62 to 64, Ford 601-701-801-901 made from 57-62, JD 520/30-620/30-720/30 series made from 56-60 something, Massy Fergison 35/135-50/150-65/165 made for 57-75 and my favorite color Allis Chalmers D-15 or D-17 made for 54-68. A web search or a little time at your public library will show you horsepower ratings and production numbers of those and other tractors such as Case and IH. Look and see what brands are comon in your area, that means there was good dealer support back when the tractors were new and also that local people are still stocking parts for most of them. Make sure you buy enough horse power, you don`t have to use all you have but there will always be times when you could use just a little more and it won`t be there. In my opinion that will need to be between 30 and 50 horse power, but sometimes you can buy a 70 hp tractor cheaper than the smaller ones. Also in my opinion you will want live or independent power to the hydraulics and PTO, you will like power steering but you can get by without it as many of the older tractors didn"t have it. I think you will also want a CAT 2, 3 point hitch or something that can be converted to that. Good luck and make sure you try out any tractor under a good work load before you buy it. Driving it around with out making it work pretty hard won`t tell you what kind of condition it is really in.
