PTO shaft keeps popping off

My PTO shaft keeps popping off my tractor after bushhogging for a couple of hours. When I go to put it back on, the coupler is hot enough that I can't comfortably hold it with bare hands. I suspect that the u-joint is going bad.

Could the heat be expanding enough to cause it slide past the cross-groove or should I be looking for something else.

A shaft that doesn't want to scope properly is often the cause of that, I have found. The heat is likely from a dry u-joint, or a shaft out of phase if it's been welded.... or trying to operate it at an angle all the time. It should operate as close to straight as possible so that the u-joint works less. A lot of those joints are none too large for the job they're doing either.

Another possibility for the heat, and hte shaft popping off is that the splines are worn on the tractor shaft, the impliment shaft, or both, and the yolk is loose. That will make heat and it could jump off. Seen it happen....
Not saying that the lock pin simply couldn't be bad either, but it wouldn't be my first guess. First thing I would check is that the shaft slides freely....

clw has a good idea. the other thing is that one of the shafts may be twisted to where it want allow the shafts to slide freely with each other, getting in a bind and pulling the connector off the pto. i"d be sure i have the problem fixed before using it again. that pto setting back there spinning around can"t be a safe thing at all, besides the damage it might do to the drive shaft and universal joints. you may need to look at the end of the drive train that slides onto the pto and besure it is worn out. i don"t think it would pull off unless something isn"t right about the connecting pieces or the push pin that is suppose to hold the drive shaft on the pto shaft.

We have an old 5' pull type mower that did that to me once. The cause was the two halves of the shaft had enough wear that it would bind when turning and not slide in and out. Short term fix was lots of grease on the shaft, but it will have to be replaced.

old is right about checking the locking pin and spring. keep it well oiled so that it works ease and that will let the spring help keep it in place. i always remove the front drive shaft from any thing that uses one and put in my shop in a dry place. one less thing to worry about somebody stealing and it keeps it clean and out of the weather. a piece of plastic tied over the other end helps protect the other u-joint. grip the u-joint and see if you have a lot of play in either direction. lucas makes a very good grease that is heavy duty (green) and seems to stay in well for me on my equiptment. i expect that some of the heat maybe transfering from your rear end. have you checked your rear end dope lately?

As usual old hit right on. Look over that snap pin close, something there is letting it loose. If the u-joint is getting warm it is, at least, out of grease. It probably too late to just grease it and make it work, but worth a try.

First off check the be sure you have it locked on like it should be. If you do then look at the lock and make sure its not wore out. One other thing you can do if the lock is wore you can put a bolt into the PTO shaft to hold it on if you line up the holes correctly. Also the lock spring maybe bad and that can cause the problem also
