I have a 315 string baler. I have loosened the springs on the bale tensioner as far as they go and the bales still come out way too tight. I noticed there are plastic linings in the chamber. Are these supposed to be there and will removing them help?.. Have baled salt hay for 7 generations but this fresh hay is a whole new animal. thanks for any help.

I would think the plastic wear liner would make the bales slide easier, not harder....
How many bale wedges are in the chamber? If it's got 4, then I'd remove one on each side. If it's got 2, then I'd remvoe them.....
Otherwise, I'd guess that the hay is too wet.

The liners are supposed to make it bale better. Sounds more too me like your baling hay not really ready to be baled.

I run a NH 315 Hayliner and do not have any thing like what you described in the bale chamber and this baler does a teriffic job! I did have a Ford 530 baler (thankfully for a short period of time) that did have parts like you describe only metal that could be bolted into the chamber. I never did use them. Are you trying to bale grass hay while too wet? That will make for a very heavy bale and also prone to spontaneous combustion! Just checked my manual and there is no mention of anything that fits inside the bale chamber. Maybe someone else has better information.

Thanks for the help. These are almost like wear strips and they were definitely inserted after the fact. I am going to take them out and try it again. The hay is good and dry and i do ususally run the other NH balers at about half tension to make a perfect bale everytime.

I would try it and please post back and let us know if that worked for you. I am real happy with my very used 315, as it ties all the time, everytime and makes a beautiful bale if she has a nice windrow! Now, if we could just get a week of rain followed by about two weeks of 30% humidity and blue skys????? Never hurts to ask!

For what it's worth, I have a NH 315 twine and mine does not have plastic linings in the chamber, just the basic steel. Is the plastic removable?
My tensioners are set around half way in to make that nice tight bale but not too tight to break the shear bolts or plunger mechanism. By the way, run that baler around 60 strokes per minute so you don't blow up the feeder mechanism.

60 strokes per minute is waaaaayyyyy ttooooo slooow. From the factory it's probably running over 100, I would run it a 93 strokes per miunute just like the later models run.

Haymaster, Could you or anyone else reading these posts tell me where I can find the wagon hitch and loading chute for my 315? I also need a left side upper panel as the previous owner apparently sent it to "baler heaven". Any help would be appreciated! Hope some of you have hay to make, we are so dry, no cutting since early May and only about 1" in the last 10 weeks, pastures and fields look brown!

EH, not sure where to find your side cover but a wagon hitch from a retired NH baler should interchange. I traded one from my retired NH 278 and put it on the NH 315. As far as the side cover, I bet it is unique to that baler and there are still many in use. I am in West Central Ohio and we have had 1" of rain since May. I just finished the last (small) field of 1st cut and all of my fields were 1/2 of what I baled up last year. Second cut fields are flowered but about 8" tall. Ain't worth my diesel, wear and tear on equipment or my time. I need a group of concerned citizens to do a rain dance!

I'll be glad to send you some of the rain we have been getting. I have not been able to get too the field to do anything in over a month. Everytime it gets a lull in the storm and gets dry enough to maybe get to some my hay, here comes another 3 or 4 inch rain. Just came over 3 inches this morning. Funny how the bills keep right on coming huh!

Gary, I know y'all have been getting hammered with the wet stuff, man wouldn't it be nice if it could be spread around a little more! Hope you have not lost too much with it already cut and on the ground. This farming stuff is a lot like the crap table in Vegas. Hope things get better for all of you out there. Best wishes, Ed

Amen to the rain dance! I guess I will have to cut before long just to clean the fields, a sort of sacrifice cutting. It is anything but fun when you get almost zero yield from the same amount of time and investment. I might try to advertise for the parts I need, just thought that someone might have a baler out there that has been put out to pasture and I could get the hitch, wagon chute and maybe a side panel. Good luck with the hay!
