I have a ford 501 - it has mostly guards that say Ford on them - I have bought a few generic #800 at TSC, but they don't exactly match - and half of them break if i try to beat on them and adjust them (the ford ones are mallable)

i see that shoup parts have generic #800 and some double ones for new holland stuff... so these are my questions.....

would the shoup #800 be better than TSC or the same?

is there a NEW HOLLAND number for a ford guard - or is this a completely different animal 9like for all the NH haybines)

I've used aftermarket guards from a local independent reseller since the 80s, first on JD #5, then Oliver 356 (used same as JD), and finally Ford 501. He carries guards with the same number which are substantially different - appears to be from two different sources. One design is trash and breaks all the time. Other design seems to last as well as OEM and is maleable with a big hammer. It's been a few years since I have used them (have a NH Haybine with stub guards now) so can't remember exact facts. I'll check my spares and try to send you more info on the Fords. BTW, The NH ones seem to last the best, even tho they are considerably more they were cheaper in the end.

I'll go out on a limb here- We've had a Ford 535 haybine, but it was made by New Idea, and as a NI it was a #290 (which is what we now have).

We can't find the "right" guards for it, but the JD guards work just fine. They have 2 different styles of JD guards at Fleet Farm, but the only difference from what I can tell is the type of bolt. One style uses a carriage head bolt, and the other uses a plow bolt w/ a counter sunk head.

These ones are a double guard, and I would imagine that yours are singles but it may be easier to switch it to doubles as they wear out (break) or just do them all at once. Maybe buy one and see if it'll work. If not, just return it.

Otherwise I think that the ones from Shoup or sickleservice.com would be far superior to the ones from TSC.

you can also try sickleservice.com for new guards with ledger plates, which are malleable. I've noticed the guards sold by TSC stamped made in Germany seem to be more malleable than the ones they also sell made in Taiwan or China. I've never broke a guard yet adjusting my Ford sickle mowers with my big hammer - lucky I guess. good luck

All the guards are cast if you want to adjust use a hand grinder to make fit not a bigger hammer .
It took me one time to figure that one out . put new guard on end of cutter bar tried to adjust with hammer & busted .

The Ford 141009 guard was replaced by N.H. number 144176 when Ford-N.H. became N.H.
