Need info on older baler

Hello, I'm looking for recommendations for an older small square baler that could be powered by a Fergie TE20 or a Case VAC. I believe both tractors hp to be in the mid 20's, but the Case does seem to pull a large plow more easily.

Mostly looking for model numbers that would work, ie JD 14T, MF 3, IH 46T, etc.

Your best bet is if you could find an oliver 50 or an international 27 both are lightweight balers that run easy as long as you dont try to push them into making bales fast. I run my 14T JD baler behind my to20 fergy and it was just to heavy to pull around much and not enuff power to hit a big windrow without plugging. Good luck in whatever you decide

If you could find a baler with its own engine on it either tractor will pull the baler but if you have hills it may not be safe to do so. With out and engine on the baler you might be able to make it work but it would be over taxing either one of the tractors. I would also say you should not pull a wagon behind a baler with those tractors because then you are pulling 2 or 3 times the weight of the tractor and if you start down a hill you will not be able to hold the load back and its just plain unsafe

I have used a Ford 250 baler since 1983. It is small, does a good job and I have run it mostly with a 1952 Ford 8N, which was our "big tractor" until a few years ago. The 250 was designed to run with the smaller Ford tractors. Issue is that parts are often difficult to locate, which we solved by buying a parts baler. After we got a 1944 JD A we used that some for baling, but I found the 8N was easier to use because you could get it out of gear quickly and get the clutch back engaged to keep the baler going in heavy hay. Also, the 250 has a very short tongue and the large rears on the A frequently contact the baler flywheel on tight turns. Most of our fields are very "hilly" so I would not want to try to pull a wagon behind the baler with the 8N.

Recently picked up a newer 50HP JD Diesel. What a difference live PTO and Hydraulic make!

A neighbor also got a 250 in the mid 80s at my recommendation and used it behind his Case VAC. Worked OK, but he eventually upgraded to International Utility Tractors. Just my 2 cents!

Add MF 9 & 10 to your list also as they are also low capacity and HP requirement units. However, I do not think that you have enough HP and weight to safely and efficiently make hay. If it were me, I would be thinking of having a neighbor make your hay or buying a larger tractor and a more modern baler. It all depends on your situation.

You are under-powered. Many have baled with your size tractors, but do understand - it will be work. Underpowered, and no live pto makes for a long hot baling day.....

I like NH balers, models 69 through 271 are all the good, lower capacity ones that can work for you.

JD T14 is also good. Not sure if the T24 would like more power?

Those 2 companies figured out balers first, and odds are you will have the most luck with them running right, & finding parts easily. Other colors of balers are not so much bad; as they are a bit less popular so less parts, less knowledge, and perhaps a bit more finiky.

As mentioned, a model with a built on engine will allow you more power & speed flexability to bale easier with your small tractors.

However, makes the baler much heavier, and those typical Wisconsin engines are a pain to restart if they stall. And another engine to maintain.....

It has been almost 50 years since I had significant baling experience but am familiar with these tractors and the baler model #s mean nothing to me. Thoughts are though with these tractors you should not try to power a baler from the PTO, baler would need its' own engine. Loading a wagon of bales behind the baler would only work under the most level and ideal ground conditions with tractors this side. Bottom line you might be able to safely use these tractors to pull a baler with its' own engine under ideal conditions but it is marginal.
