Found an old New Idea pto driven manure spreader a few weeks ago. Have used it without too much trouble, except that when I have some heavy stuff to throw it goes through shear pins. I have been using a soft bolt and am wondering if I can go to a Grade 5 bolt or will that be asking for trouble.

As usual thanks for any insight you give.

We use grade 5's in our manure spreader, it's an older H&S model and it will shear about 1 set up front about once a year. The apron drive hardly ever breaks, and I can't say it's cause I never over load it because the tailgate knocks some back while it's feeding into the beaters. All we've ever used on it in the 20-30 years we've had it.

I'd say go for a grade 5, but like the others say make sure all the paddles are there and in good condition. Make sure the bearings are greased too. Grade 5 shouldn't cause any trouble, but a grade 8 might.

Years ago we used hickory dowels in an oliver and I replaced with a bolt and it sprong the beam and it never plowed as nice as it did before,So go with what is called for.CENTAUR

Take a look at your beater and make sure that you have all the paddles that are supposed to be there, if you have any that are bent badly or missing it will start breaking pins when spreading hard packed manure.
