Can someone help me identify a particular model of John Deere combine? When I was growing up a neighboring farmer had a John Deere pull type combine. It had its own engine;an operator sat on the combine to fill/tie the grain sacks and put them into a chute mounted on the side. After he had 3 bags in the chute, he pulled a rope which lifted a gate at the end and the bags dropped to the ground. A second crew with a tractor and flat bed wagon followed around the field picking up the bags. I spent a lot of time riding on that combine with my old farmer neighbor Walt who usually did the bagging. One day in 1966 or 67 I even got to drive the pick up tractor. Just trying to find out what model that would have been and maybe locate a picture of 1.

Thanks guys for all your replies. WyoDav I can say that it wasn't a 5A. It looked more like the model 25s or 30s in the Implement Photos section.

More likely a 12A, your scenario could have described my experience in the 1950s.

There are a few possibilities for what it could have been. I'm no expert on the old JD combines, but I would imagine it could have been a 1, 2, 3, 5, 5-a, 7 or 17. I can't say for sure they all had sacking attatchments. I know the 5a did, but can't guarantee the others. Here is a picture of my 5a with a Lycoming motor, but set up with a bin, and not a sacking attatchment. I can maybe scan you a copy of a picture of one with the sacking attatchment out of the 5a owners manaul if you would like.
